On March 1, cannons fired from Norwich in honor of Rook recognition for the current class of first year members of the Corps. This ceremony is rich with history and meaning for the class being recognized. Their era of being referred to as a Rook is over, and they are now officially members of the Corps of Cadets. You'd be hard-pressed to find an upper-class Corps member who does not know the exact date and time of their own recognition as a Cadet.

On the Admissions page of the www.norwich.edu website, student blogs are featured to give prospective students a taste of life at Norwich. William Day, a freshman member of the Corps of Cadets describes his experience of this year's recognition. Writing on his blog on March 2, Day wrote, "It finally happened last night, and even though every single freshman on the hill knew it was coming, it didn't detract from the feeling we had."

Along with the recognition, the new Cadets are also awarded a number of privileges that include listening to music, walking across the Upper Parade Ground, visiting student rooms, wearing civilian clothes, and leaving campus.

The mathematics department had reported that third-year student Jeremy Holden was awarded a prestigious summer position at the Center for Discrete Mathematics and Theoretical Computer Science at Rutgers University in New Jersey. Holden will work in the competitive Research Experience for Undergraduates program on theoretical labeling problems.

In addition, Holden was also one of just five students selected for a travel option. This will include a two week trip at a similar institute in the city of Prague in the Czech Republic.

Students are on Spring Break the week of March 9-13. Classes resume as normal on Monday, March 16th.
