NEWS FROM THE HILL

By LISA BRUCKEN Norwich University

The weekend of April 17-19 was special for members of the 2010 Junior Class of the Corps of Cadets. The Junior Ring retreat parade and ceremony were held on April 17th and the traditional ball on April 18th. This is a highly anticipated event for cadets where they are presented with their Norwich class ring.

The tradition of the Norwich ring dates back to 1923 and was standardized as a design in the 1960's. One side of the ring is designed by the each class; the other has a specific tradition design unique to the University. All symbols of Corps tradition and Norwich history, the pieces include Cavalry Sabers, the NUCC scroll, Norwich Shield, Eagle, Honor Scroll and the school motto "I Will Try."

Cadets wear the class crest facing them until graduation when it is reversed. Ordering and wearing the ring is a beloved tradition for a cadet. Most cadets order two rings: one for everyday wear and another "dress ring" for special occasions.

As quoted from the Corps section of the Norwich website, "The Norwich ring is the most prized of a cadet's worldly possessions, and much effort goes into earning the right to wear it."

The Board of Trustees will be on campus April 23-25 for general meetings. On Friday April 24th at 5:30 p.m. General Gordon R. Sullivan USA (Ret), class of 1959 and Chairman, 0will join the other Board members in dedicating the Engineering, Math and Science complex as Bartoletto Hall.

Mr. Bartoletto distinguished himself as a Norwich student, serving as President of his class and his fraternity, and as an officer in his company. He graduated from Norwich with honors as an electrical engineering major. After graduating, Mr. Bartoletto worked at General Electric for thirteen years and Massey Ferguson for five years before co-founding Temperform Corporation in 1970. Throughout his professional career Mr. Bartoletto has been a strong supporter of his alma mater.
