Norse Maiden Visits Sugar Shack

Photo courtesy Mary Dollenmaier Photo courtesy Mary Dollenmaier The Anomaly Sugar Shack at Callahan Lamb Farm had a sweet season this spring. Anomaly produced 12 gallons of maple syrup, ranging in color from birdseye maple gold to espresso brown. This year's yield was 60 per cent greater than 2008. The sap is collected 'a mano' from 100 trees on the Smith Hill sugar bush. The highest density of taps are a quarter mile from the sugar house. Small batches of sap are boiled off on the Leader Half Pint evaporator. Each batch takes a minimum of 9 hours to produce 2 to 3 gallons of 'priceless' maple syrup. Anomaly is looking for a replacement sugar rig to double its capacity in 2010. What do you do to pass the time during the boiling? The most common activity is to meet and greet visitors. This year a fair Norse maiden appeared. Her locks were like golden baling twine woven into fine braids. Sugaring is the antidote to cabin fever.
