Local Physician Gives Scholarships To High Schoolers
Northfield's own Dr. Kevin Crowley has donated four scholarships to students at South Burlington High School.
Dr. Crowley was one of 75 participants in the high school's EXPO where potential colleges and other groups meet with students to help them plan their careers.
He was one of several who were allied in the field of health and medical services for students interested in pursuing a career in math, science, medicine or health care.
Dr. Crowley offered a $500 scholarship to the student who receives the most votes by the medical and health care representatives at EXPO and the voting came down to a four way tie.
In previous years, Dr. Crowley has given out IPods but this year decided upon a scholarship.
"I funded the scholarship because South Burlington and the students that go there deserve the recognition," he said. "Each time I'm there, I see many bright young faces with students that are going to do something good for the world. I think back to my own youth and people were doing nice things for me. It's my way to pay them back."
"My decision to go into nursing came about after a lot of back and forth," said Zachery Warshaw, one of the scholarship winners. "I wanted to do something I knew I would really enjoy, still get a good paycheck and be able to have a life as well," he added. He will be going to the UVM School of Nursing this fall.
"Dr. Crowley's scholarship was an unexpected and welcome surprise," Zachery added, "It's the first scholarship money that I've received. It will be great for helping me pay for books next semester," he said.
