The Torn & Tattered Flags On Our Veterans' Graves

OPED By JOHN CRUICKSHANK The Northfield News

I was extremely troubled to see the torn and tattered flags on the graves of our veterans in the Northfield cemeteries have been left there. No one has undertaken to put new ones out except, perhaps, a few individual families.

I did put new ones on my own family's graves, then decided something had to be done for everyone.

Checking the graves in surrounding towns, all seem to have bright, new flags on the graves of all the veterans. Why wasn't something done here is a mystery to many of us.

We've decided to act. It's too late for Memorial Day but we can do it before Flag Day on June 14.

There's a group of us who will get the flags, put them out and raise the money necessary to buy the flags.

Bill Lyon has agreed to hold any money that may be donated to purchase the flags themselves. Anyone interested in donating to see that the flags are replaced or wants to help put them out can call the News office at 485-NEWS. The flags cost about $1.50 each. Itis the least we can do for those who served.
