The Northfield High Girl's softball team finally got on the winning track last week. And they did it twice! After losing their first nine games of the season, the Marauder ladies knocked off Winooski 7-5 last Tuesday and then came from behind to defeat Danville 12-11 on Thursday.
"The girls are really excited," said head coach Scott Hellman, " they have kept their spirits up and have been working hard. They have finally seen the results of all that work. Their spirits have been high no matter what, and they have never given up on themselves, or each other. I am so proud of these girls. If we can pick up two more wins we can make it into the playoffs."
The Danville game was an exercise in patience. Danville jumped out to a 2-0 lead in the top of the first but the Maroon & White countered with four in the bottom of the opening stanza, and they added two more in the third.
Things really looked comfortable for Northfield after they plated 5 more runs in the fourth to take an 11-5 lead. Danville ,however, kept inching ever closer with two runs in the fifth, and then the Indians tied things up with a four run sixth inning.
Good defense by Chelsea Dion at third base and Olivia Drown at first base shut down the Danville attack and stopped the rally.
In the bottom of the seventh, Melissa Kelsey was hit by a pitch and Lindsey Hunt ra pped out a single. That Brought Chelsea Dion to the plate, and she rose to the occasion. Her drive plated Melissa Kelsey and the Lady Marauders came away with the12-11 victory.
