The MacKenzie Church in Riverton which has been continuously holding Sunday services since 1870 is closing effective July 1.

Hazel Gordon, the church treasurer said that due to the current financial condition of the church, they just can no longer continue to hold weekly services.

Only about 5 members have been attending services regularly and when the cost of heating oil climbed to $900 per month during the winter, they just couldn't continue to afford to keep the church open, she said.

The church will continue to hold its rummage and bake sales as in the past because the church expenses to a certain extent will continue even though the church is closed, she said.
