Civil War Letters Will Be Read on the Common In Pageant
The Paine Mountain Arts Council's annual Summer on the Common series continues on July 14 with the last segment on July 21 at 7 p.m. on the Northfield Common, rain or shine. If there's rain, the event will be held inside the United Church just above the Common.
The programs will feature youth and adult performers from Northfield and nearby communities and will include soloists, quartets, choruses, instrumentalists, jazz ensembles, and a dramatic reading.
The July 14 dramatic reading, presented as a mini play, is a new feature for Summer on the Common.
Cast members will read excerpts from authentic letters sent by a Northfield Civil War soldier to his family at home.
Nate Freeman portrays Martin Sheldon, the soldier; Nikki Hebert is Betsey, his wife; Abigail Hebert is Edola, his daughter; and Thatcher Hebert is Little Fred, his son.
Roy Butler, from the Northfield Historical Society, is the historical researcher.
This production is a collaboration the Paine Mountain Arts Council and the Northfield Historical Society.
As always, Summer on the Common brings together local talent to perform for local audiences. These casual, homey, Tuesday evening programs attract audiences of up to 100 or more; from elders using walkers to babies in strollers. Some folks bring a picnic or a pizza and relax while youngsters wade in the fountain or dance spontaneously during the rousing musical renditions.
The arts in many forms are well represented in this local grass roots tradition. The audience is invited to bring their own chairs or blankets the performances. Rain location is traditionally in Howe's Hall at the United Church on the hill above the Common.
