First Summer Concert Gets Rain But Fun Had By All Inside
Summer on the Common kicked off it's tenth season last Tuesday Night.
The first of three concerts in the series could better have been called "Summer off the Common" because the event had to be moved into the United Church because of thunderstorms in the area.
The concert featured performances from two barbershop quartets and two Northfield guitarists.
"The Long and the Short of it", a Women's barbershop quartet got things started with a rousing number of 1940's and 50's hits and concluded with an excellent rendition of "Why Do Fools Fall In Love?" that had the small crowd rocking the church.
Eleven year old Ethan Warner, a Northfield guitarist opened up with a Beatles song, "Get Back", and then he and his guitar teacher, Paul Caimpaglia performed a number of their own original creations. Once again, the crowd was impressed.
The final performers in the evening's entertainment were CVQ, a barbershop quarter that featured Northfield's own Neil Cerutti.
CVQ has a style that they refer to as "Swing and 50's". But they reached into the 60's and 70's as well. The group opened with a patriotic George M. Cohen medley and then slid into "Happy Together" a song made popular by The Turtles in the 1960's.
The group seamlessly jumped ahead a decade or so as they performed "A Wink and Smile" from the movie Sleepless in Seattle. They wrapped up with "Sh-A-Boom, a popular Mills Brothers hit from the 50's and "Recipe For Love. CQV left the patrons wanting more.
The small turnout was directly related to the inclement weather and Jim Jones, the Manager and Coordinator of Summer on the Common felt that the crowd would have been much larger if the weather had been better.
"When we are outside on the common, we usually get crowds of 100 or more. The crowd itself is like a magnet. People see the crowd and gravitate on over to see what it's all about. It's disappointing to have to be inside but we still have two more events. Hopefully we will get better weather," Mr. Jones said.
