Vermont Public Television Program Highlights for Aug. 9 to 16:

Aug. 9: Sunday at 9 p.m., "Masterpiece Mystery!" presents the third and final episode of "Wallander." Kenneth Branagh stars as the scruffy Swedish detective as he races to catch up with a serial killer.

Aug. 10: Monday at 7:30 p.m. on "Profile," Fran Stoddard interviews author, activist and performer Marc Estrin of Burlington.

At 9 p.m., the "History Detectives" team investigates a book that may have been a gift from John Adams to his son and a home in the Bronx that may have been the birthplace of hip hop.

At 10 p.m., the owners, animals and judges of the International Cat Show are the subject of a quirky documentary in the "Standard of Perfection" series.

Aug. 11: Tuesday at 8 p.m., "Nova: The Deadliest Plane Crash" investigates what went wrong when two 747s collided on the runway at a tiny airport in the Canary Islands, killing 583 people.

At 9 p.m. on "Nova scienceNOW," Neil deGrasse Tyson and crew take a new view of leeches, search for extraterrestrial intelligence and look at stem cells.

Aug. 12: Wednesday at 7:30 p.m., "Roadside Stories With Bob Wilson" highlights tales from the program's first season, meeting interesting folks from around New England.

At 8 p.m., "Live From Lincoln Center" presents violinist Joshua Bell with the Mostly Mozart Festival Orchestra. Bell is soloist on Mendelssohn's Violin Concerto.

Aug. 13: Thursday at 7:30 p.m., "Food Trip With Todd English" is in South Africa, where the host goes on a photo safari, learns about Zulu culture and experiences a torchlight feast.

At 9 p.m., the National Geographic series "Inside" tells another behind-the-scenes story. This time, it's how the creative people behind "The Lord of the Rings" bring Tolkien's Middle Earth to life on a London stage.

At 10 p.m., "Richard Bangs' Adventures With a Purpose" goes to Assam, India, a region of rushing rivers, monsoons, expanses of unspoiled land and a staggering array of wildlife.

Aug. 14: Friday at 10 p.m., "P.O.V." presents "Made in L.A.," the story of three Latina immigrants working in garment factories. For three years, they fought to bring a major retailer to the bargaining table.

Aug. 15: Saturday at 8:30 p.m. on "The Thin Blue Line," Inspector Fowler (Rowan Atkinson) prepares his team for the pub quiz.

At 10 p.m., "Austin City Limits" features singer/songwriter Manu Chao's politically charged, danceable rock 'n' roll.
