Vermont Public Television Program Highlights for Aug. 30 to Sept. 5

Aug. 30: Sunday at 2 p.m., VPT encores the two-hour special "The Adirondacks," following the seasons, stories and historical tales of the region.

At 9 p.m., "Masterpiece Mystery!" begins seven new episodes of "Inspector Lewis," with more crimes to solve in Oxford. Lewis and Hathaway connect the murders of a student and a maintenance engineer to a gambling addiction group.

Aug. 31: Monday at 7:30 p.m. on "Profile," Fran Stoddard talks with writer Melissa Pasanen and chef Rick Gencarelli, authors of "Cooking With Shelburne Farms."

At 8 p.m., "Antiques Roadshow" visits Tucson for the first of three programs, appraising two Picasso-designed vases and an ornate saddle.

At 9 p.m., the "History Detectives" team investigates mysteries, including a portrait created in a German prisoner of war camp.

Sept. 1: Tuesday at 8 p.m., "Nova" looks at scientific results from the Mars rovers and Phoenix probe that reveal clues in the search for water and life on the Red Planet.

At 9 p.m. on "Nova scienceNOW," Neil de Grasse Tyson and his team look at why earthquakes strike in the heartland, the role of sleep in strengthening memories and the evolutionary precursors of primates.

Sept. 2: Wednesday at 8 p.m., "American Masters" encores its biography of Cary Grant, the elegant, adored leading man whose greatest role was probably himself.

At 9:30 p.m., a new "American Masters" tells the story of Hollywood writer Dalton Trumbo, who, in 1947, refused to testify before the House Un-American Activities Committee and was imprisoned. He went on to write 30 scripts and win an Oscar, using pseudonyms.

Sept. 3: Thursday at 8 p.m., VPT's "Report From Washington" welcomes Rep. Peter Welch, D-Vt., for a live call-in show during which viewers can ask him questions on the issues of the day. Mark Johnson hosts. The program will also be webcast on www.vpt.org.

At 9 p.m., the National Geographic series "Inside" tells another behind-the-scenes story. This time, it's a look at busy Miami International Airport.

Sept. 4: Friday at 8 p.m., "Washington Week," PBS's longest-running public affairs series, features Washington's top journalists analyzing the week's top news stories and their effect on the lives of all Americans. Gwen Ifill hosts.

At 10 p.m., "P.O.V." presents "Ella es el Matador," a profile of two of Spain's top women bullfighters.

Sept. 5: Saturday at 3 p.m., "Great Performances" offers "Pete Seeger's 90th Birthday Celebration From Madison Square Garden." Joining the legendary folk artist are Joan Baez, Ani DiFranco, Arlo Guthrie, Emmylou Harris, Richie Havens, Kris Kristofferson, Taj Mahal, Dave Matthews, Roger McGuinn, John Mellencamp, Peggy Seeger, Bruce Springsteen and many others who perform songs inspired by his music and activism.

At 5 p.m., Peter Marshall hosts "The Big Band Years," recalling the hits from World War II and beyond.

At 9 p.m. on "Leonard Cohen Live in London," the singer/songwriter performs in London during his 2008 UK tour, with classics from his 40- year repertoire.
