Barbara Mabel Campbell, 66, High School Class of '61
WYNANTSKILL, N.Y. - Barbara Mabel Campbell, 66, of Blue Heron Way in Wynantskill, passed away on August 13, 2009, at her home after a short illness.
Barbara was born on February 28, 1943. She lived on the family farm in Berlin, VT, with her grandfather George W. Williams; her mother Mary Ellen Flint; and her sister Evalyn until they moved to Williamstown, VT, in 1945.
She attended Williamstown grade school and graduated as salutatorian from Williamstown High School in 1961. Barbara earned a bachelor of science degree in education from Castleton State College in Vermont in 1965.
She taught grades 2-5 in the Averill Park School District in Averill Park for 35 years.
Barbara was highly respected in her field and her innovative teaching style inspired her students to always strive for higher goals. Though she retired in 2000, parents and students still share their high regard for her in notes and letters.
Barbara enjoyed many outdoor activities such as kayaking, xcountry skiing, biking and gardening. For many winters Barbara returned to Vermont, donned snowshoes and helped her family with their maple sugaring business. She also loved sports, and she played on a record-setting basketball team all through high school.
She leaves her mother, Mary Ellen Campbell Flint from Williamstown; her sister Evalyn Goodrich from Barre, VT, and her stepsister Shirley Flint from Williamstown; nephews Robert Goodrich and his wife Edith, Fred and Larry Goodrich of Barre, VT, and Jeffrey Goodrich of Everett, MA; great-nieces Sophronia and Amber Goodrich of Barre and Hannah Goodrich of Massachusetts; and several cousins. She was predeceased by her grandfather George W. Williams and stepfather, Roy Flint.
A private graveside service was held Friday, Aug. 28, 2009, at 1 p.m. at Berlin Corner's Cemetery in Berlin.
The Rev. Deborah Laporte of the United Federated Church in Williamstown officiated.
Following the committal service, family gathered at the home of Mary Ellen Flint, Barbara's mother, for a time of fellowship and refreshments.
