Boys Are 2-0, Girls Are 2-1 In Soccer
Both the Williamstown Boy's soccer team and Girl's soccer teams records stand at 2-1 after last week's action. The boy's beat Craftsbury 4-0 in their only game of the week while the girls lost to Thetford 2-0 on Thursday and defeated Craftsbury 3-2 in overtime on Saturday.
For the season, the bors have two wins and no losses while the girls have 2 wins and one loss.
The Boy's victory came on Saturday as well. In a game that saw the action flow up and back , but saw Williamstown carry the play, the Blue evils got a pair of goals from senior captain Johnny Earls, who tallied markers in each half to lead the Devils. Williamstown also got goals from senior Ray Burgos and freshman Justin Beaudin to seal the 4-0 win and move the Blue Devils to 2-1 on the season.
The Girl's week was a little tougher. Following the tough loss at Thetford, the Girls really had to work to pull out a win in the rain on the small Craftsbury field.
"Given the conditions, I told the girls to keep it simple. Their field is not as big as ours and we didn't have room to stretch things out as we like to do. I told them to keep the touches to a minimum and keep the ball moving. I told them to not get frustrated, just play their game and things would work out," said coach Jay Villa.
Craftsbury opened the scoring six minutes into the game on a goal by Abbie Aden and it took a 1-0 lead. It took the Lady Devils a while to 0D even things up, but sophomore, Lourdes Perry leveled the score in the 34th minute when she got the ball at midfield and outran everybody to boot in a goal to make it 1-1. Craftsbury jumped back in front in the games' 54th minute when Meghan Pennock took advantage of a Williamstown defensive mix up and popped in the lead goal to make it 2-1 Craftsbury with 26 minutes left in the game.
Things looked bleak for the Lady Devils when Craftsbury was awarded a penalty Kick in the 65th minute. But Williamstown's senior goalkeeper, Emma Lamson came up with a big save and lifted the Lady Devil's spirits. "That save was a game changer, it really got us moving," said coach Villa.
Just four minutes later Lourdes Perry struck again. She took a low pass from Alexandra Flowers and converted it into the game tying goal.
They went to overtime all even at 2-2, and in the ninth minute of the 10 minute O.T. Kristin Brown took a nice feed from Brittany Farnham and turned it into the game winner when she found the back of the Craftsbury net to give the Lady Devils the 3- 2, overtime victory.
Both the Blue Devil's Teams will host Concord this Friday with the Girl's playing at 3 p.m. and the Boy's starting at 5 p.m. on the high school field.
