Driver In Last Year's Kyrie Edson Crash Pleads Innocent To Felony Criminal Negligence Charge

The Northfield News

Many will recall the head on two car automobile crash that occurred on Route 12 on the line between Berlin and Northfield in July, 2008 where Kyrie Edson, 22, and her then one-month-old baby were passengers in one of the vehicles. Both were pulled from the car and hospitalized with a long list of injuries the News reported at the time.

Last week, a Northfield Falls man was accused of criminal negligence for allegedly causing the head-on two-car crash.

Darrin M. Rogers, 20, pleaded innocent in Vermont District Court in Barre to careless and negligent operation of a motor vehicle.

The charge is a felony and he could receive a sentence of up to 15 years in prison and up to $15,000 in fines.

Mr. Rogers was released on court conditions after the brief arraignment hearing.

In July of last year, a sport utility vehicle driven by Mr. Rogers collided with a pickup truck, according to an affidavit written by Berlin police officer Jason Billings who arrived at the scene.

Lana Hale, 56, had been driving the truck involved in the crash, the affidavit stated. She had to be pried from her vehicle and sustained major injuries and according to friends has undergone many surgeries and is still not healed.

The Berlin officer determined that Mr. Rogers had been driving southbound and drifted into the northbound lane, hitting Ms. Hale's truck. The complaint alleges that Mr. Rogers was negligent because he fell asleep as he was driving and though he was required to wear glasses when driving, he was wearing someone else's glasses and not his own at the time.
