VERMONT PUBLIC TELEVISION PROGRAM HIGHLIGHTS FOR OCTOBER 25 TO 31

Oct. 25: Sunday at 2 p.m., the rebroadcast of "The National Parks: America's Best Idea" continues with the years 1933- 45. National parks provided much-needed jobs and solace.

At 8 p.m., "Nature" begins its new season with the continuing saga of Cloud, the wild white stallion, now in his prime, who roams the mountains of Montana.

At 9 p.m., "Masterpiece Contemporary" presents "Endgame," a drama about the backroom deals and tense negotiations that led to the end of apartheid in South Africa. William Hurt and Chiwetel Ejiofor star.

Oct. 26: Monday at 7:30 p.m., "Profile" continues its ninth season as Fran Stoddard talks with Gordon McCall, a Canadian director, actor and writer.

At 9 p.m., "American Experience: The Crash of 1929" recalls the stock market plunge. The program kicks off a five-week look at America in the 1930s.

At 10 p.m., "Herbert Hoover: Landslide" recalls a humanitarian and politician whose presidency has been largely defined by the Great Depression.

Oct. 27: Tuesday at 8 p.m., "Nova" encores "The Family That Walks on All Fours," an extraordinary group in Turkey who raise fascinating scientific and sociological questions.

At 10 p.m., "Frontline" chronicles how the middle class is faring in the recession by focusing on the owner, employees and patrons of a New York City salon.

Oct. 28: Wednesday at 8 p.m., "The Botany of Desire," based on Michael Pollan's bestselling book, explores humans' relationship with plants from the plant's point of view. Four familiar species - the apple, tulip, marijuana and potato -- have evolved to satisfy human desires while fulfilling their own.

At 10 p.m., "The Buffalo Flows" chronicles the efforts to prevent the damming of Arkansas' Buffalo River, one of the nation's last free-flowing rivers.

Oct. 29: Thursday at 7:30 p.m. on the cooking series "Avec Eric" with Eric Ripert, the host learns about the lives of cheesemakers and other culinary artisans in Tuscany. Back home, he makes a classic linguini carbonara.

At 8 p.m., "VPT Public Square" looks at mental illness in Vermont. Host Kristin Carlson and a guest panel explain what services are available for those who are ill and look at ways to improve care. The program will also be webcast live at www.vpt.org. This VPT program is part of a month of statewide efforts related to mental health.

Oct. 30: Friday at 10 p.m., "Independent Lens" presents "Journals of a Wily School." In an effort to crack down on more serious crime, police in Kolkata, India, offer a young pickpocket a pardon if he'll help track down notorious criminals.

Oct. 31: Saturday at 8:30 p.m., the classic Britcom "Fawlty Towers" returns to VPT. John Cleese plays the bungling innkeeper Basil Fawlty.

At 10 p.m. on "Austin City Limits," M. Ward performs songs from his release "Hold Time."

At 11 p.m. on "Legends & Lyrics," Susan Tedeschi, Kip Winger and James Slater perform.
