Bells To Toll For Climate Action
More than 3,700 events will take place in 162 countries around the world this Saturday and two of those events will be held in Northfield.
On the Common, students from Northfield Middle High School will be making a chain 350 links long.
On Main Street, members of St. Mary's and the Northfield United Church will be ringing their church bell 350 times.
Their actions are connected to 350.org, an international grassroots campaign dedicated to uniting the world around solutions to the climate crisis. This December, world leaders will meet in Copenhagen, Denmark to craft a new global treaty on cutting carbon emissions.
350.org co-founder, Bill McKibben said, "Current atmospheric levels of carbon dioxide—390 parts per million— are causing damage to the planet and to its most vulnerable people. Government action at the Copenhagen climate conference is required to bring the earth's carbon level swiftly down to a safer number of 350 parts per million."
Jane Bryant, one of the local organizers said that everyone is invited to stop by either church to take a turn ringing the bell and to drop by the Common to make their own link. "It will be the most widespread day of climate action ever," she said.
Photos and videos of the actions will be displayed on the massive screens in Times Square, in the heart of New York City.
On the Monday after October 24th, the 350.org crew will be visiting UN headquarters in NYC to hand-deliver the photos to diplomats and delegates from around the world to make sure they know how much activists want a global climate deal that meets the science.
Miss Bryant said that Northfield activities, and photos--if all goes well, may be viewed on www.350.org.
