Prices To Rise At Recycling Center
There are big changes afoot at the Northfield Recycling Center.
Effective on November 1, the price of recycling everything is going to go up significantly according to a flyer that is being handed out at the center.
In the past, there was a charge for taking regular trash to the center but there was no charge for plastic bottles, cans and newspapers.
Now, all that is going to change. Not only will customers have to pay to recycle their cans, plastic bottles and newspapers but they will also have to bag them in plastic garbage bags and will be charged according to weight.
The charge for recyclables will be $1.50 per 15-gallon bag, $2.00 for a 30- gallon bag and $3.00 for a bag more than 30 pounds.
Also, the charge for dropping off regular trash bags full of garbage is going to go up $.50 a bag.
"It Seems ironic that waste reduction means more plastic bags," said Kay Schleuter, a regular recycler at the Northfield center. "In the past, I just put all my recyclables in bins and throw them in the collection container there, as does everyone else," she added. "After November 1, if we now have to stop and pay, this could make the wait in line even longer."
Kay wondered whether this would stop people from recycling. "I hope it doesn't," she said but the increased cost could be a budget stopper to some.
The recycling depot is open Saturdays from 8:00 - 3:00 and Wednesdays 8:00- noon. There was flyer posted at the center explaining the raises with a business card attached telling anyone that wants more information may contact the CVSWMD: Mia Roethelein, Field Program Coordinator, fieldprogram@cvswmd.org - 229-9383 - http://www.cvswmd.org.
