Northfield Boys Win Over Peoples 1 - 0
Northfield's Kevin Darling, in white, finds a small space between two Peoples academy defenders in last Wednesday's game at Garvey Field. Kevin blasted nine shots at the Wolves goal in the first half of the match and got an assist on Michael Davison's score in the closing minute of the first half as the Marauders defeated Peoples academy, 1-0. Northfield High Boy's soccer split a pair of home games last week. The Marauders Topped Peoples Academy 1-0 last Wednesday and on Friday, again at Garvey Field they fell to Div. II Harwood by a 3-0 count. With the split the Marauder record stands at 6-6-1 with two games left in the regular season. The Marauders will visit Spaulding this Saturday for an 11 a.m. match.
Against Harwood the Marauder offense just couldn't get into gear. The Div. II Highlanders tallied twice in the first half and never had to look back. Harwood's Michael Riccardi scored on a corner kick to get things started for the Highlanders in the game's second Minute and it was all downhill from there for the Marauders. The Black and Gold struck again in the first half when Andrew Mavin took a nice feed from Ryan Spittle and ripped he ball past Billy Whaley in the Northfield net for a 2-0 Harwood lead. The highlanders added one more on a second half score by Noah Goss-Woliner to make it a 3-0 win over Northfield.
Things were different at Garvey Field last Wednesday. Both Peoples and Northfield came into the match with five wins and the pace of play reflected the parity of the two Div. III teams. Play was back and forth and mostly between the penalty areas during the first. But Northfield made the most of their trips over the mid field stripe. The Marauders racked up nine shots on goal in the first half and one of them finally found the mark. Michael Davison broke the scoring drought in the final minute of the first half. He took a feed from Zack Daly and converted into the game's only goal. The Marauders went into the intermission with that slim 1-0 lead and when they came out for the second half they found that the Wolves had turned their defense up a notch. Peoples dominated play in the second half and didn't allow the Marauders a shot for the first 24 minutes of the second half. The first shot the Marauders took was on a Direct kick by Eli Diebold. At the other end of the pitch Northfield's Billy Whaley was getting a workout as the Peoples offense had turned things up a notch, too. Peoples out-shot Northfield 8—1 in the second half. " We were flat in the first half but we got it turned around in the second half," said Peoples coach Marc Newton. " But give Northfield credit. They outworked us, they're an aggressive team. We had chances but we just couldn't put the ball in the net."
Northfield's coach Geoff Davison was pleased with the effort and the outcome. "They seemed to control possession in the second half, but I'm very pleased with the overall performance," the coach said.
With theur 6-6-1 record and the season closing this week the Marauders await the playoff picks that are coming up this weekend. The last regular season game for the Maroon & White Boys will be at Spaulding this Saturday at 11 a.m..
