The Lady Blue Devil's shut-out Cannan 3-0 in the senior day contest. The Williamstown Girl's soccer team ended their regular season on a successful note last week.
The Lady Blue Devils shut-out Cannan 3-0 in the only game they played. They wrapped up their regular season with a record of 10-2 and were undefeated at home.
Last Friday was senior day and the four seniors on the team, Janra Bresett, Sarah Bailey, Kristin Brown and Emma Lamson were honored in a brief but moving and heartfelt ceremony given by head coach Jay Villa.
After the coach spoke briefly about the players individually each player was given a flower and the player then presented the flower to their parents in the crowd. Coach Villa also presented flowers to the Cannan seniors on the Eagle's team.
Once the game got underway it was back and fourth for most of the first half with most of the play between the penalty boxes. But the Lady "Devils finally broke the scoring ice with five minutes left in the first half when Erika Gauthier threaded a nice pass through the Cannan defense to Kristin Brown at the top of the box and KB did the rest. She drilled a shot that found the back of the Eagle net and it was 1-0 Williamstown, as they headed into the intermission.
At Halftime coach Villa had a lot to say to his players. " I told them you need to earn the right to play your game. The first team to blink will lose. I also reminded them of three things. We're playing for our seniors today and we're playing for he Central Vermont League (CVL) banner," the coach said. But the coach wasn't through. "We haven't lost at home all year," the coach said, "We know they will come right at us so we have to play our game."
Williamstown got off to a fast start in the second half and controlled play. The Lady "Devils got a break 13 minutes into the second stanza when Cannan was whistled down for a hand ball in the penalty box.
Junior center back, Heather Gonier got the call and she converted the penalty kick with a low shot just inside the lest post and changed the single digit on the scoreboard, making it 2-0, Williamstown.
"Heather doesn't get much credit. She's a nearly perfect player. She's one of the main reasons that we have given up only 9 goals all year," said coach Villa.
The Lady Blue Devils struck again in the game's 66th minute with some nice play on a Kristin Brown corner kick. Janra Bresett controlled the kick and booted it back to Kristin who was moving in from the corner and she put the ball in the goal mouth and Lourdes (Lulu) Perry redirected it into the net giving the Lady 'Devils a 3-0 lead. The goal was Lulu's 12th of the year and the assist was the ninth of and made KB the all time Williamstown single season assist leader. It also gave her 23 career assists.
"We played well against a good club, today, said Coach Villa. "Our fab freshmen came Bailey was a real field general out there today.
With the 3-0 victory over Cannan the Lady Devil's finished the regular season with a record of 10-2. They will head into the playoffs this week.
