The Williamstown Boy’s picked up a pair of impressive wins over Div. IV foes last week. Last Monday the Blue Devil Boys rolled over Stowe 71-53 and on Saturday the traveled to Craftsbury and came away with a 75-34 thrashing of the Chargers. With those wins the Blue & White Guys went to 5-0 as they headed into Northfield for a Monday night showdown against the Marauders.
At Craftsbury the Blue Devils poured through a bundle of points, scoring 39 in the first half, but coach Jack Carrier could only cite the defense. “ We played with a lot of defensive pressure,” the coach said. “ I want to recognize the bench,” he added. “ Those players stepped up when they had a chance. We got a lot of quality minutes from our bench today.”
Ray Burgos led the scoring parade for the Blue Devils with 18 points and he was closely followed by Troy Laughlin who tossed in16. The “ Devil’s other big man, Steven Manwaring chipped in with 12. The bench contributed to the offense as well. Kyle Benway got 7, as did Justin Beaudet while Mitch St. Onge threw in 6 and Logan Clark added a bucket of his own. When the dust had settled on the snowy plain at Craftsbury the final score was Williamstown 75 Craftsbury 34.
Things didn’t start out as well for the Blue & White guys last Monday.
Stowe jumped out to a 5-0 lead in the first two minutes and the Blue Devils couldn’t seem to find the basket. But Steven Manwaring went to work inside and poured through an inside shot and drew a foul. His free throw cut the early Stowe lead to 5-3. That would be the high water mark for the Raiders. When Nick Gagnon nailed a 3 ball with 2: 20 left in the first it gave Williamstown a 6-5 lead and the handwriting was on the wall for Stowe to read. The Blue Devil lead stretched out to 16-7 after one quarter and stood at 32-14 at the half as The ‘Devils scored another 16 in quarter number two.
Stowe did throw a bit of a scare into the Blue Devils in the third quarter. The Raiders closed to within 8 at 33-25 but the ‘Devils countered with a run of their own and when Mitch St.Onge threw in a buzzer beater to end the third, the Williamstown lead had stretched to
57-35 with one quarter left to play.
The Stowe offense did manage to finally come alive and toss in 18 fourth quarter points. But Williamstown had 14 of their own and given the huge Blue Devil lead heading into the fina stanza, the Blue Devils won going away 71-53. Troy Laughlin led the Williamstown scorers with
19 points while Steven Manwaring added 13 and Johnny Earls and Nick Gagnon each tossed in 12 for the victorious Blue Devils.
