Northfield Police Report

December 16 2:07 a.m. - Suspicious Person/ Circumstance – An officer received a call from a patron of a local convenience store who advised she witnessed a passenger in a vehicle remove a beer can and throw it away while arriving at the store. The officer located the vehicle and initiated a traffic stop. The vehicle was checked and no alcohol was located inside. The driver was sober. The passenger was of age. The passenger advised he just threw away the empty can.

5:50 a.m. - Suspicious Person/ Circumstance – An officer was dispatched to the above location due to a report of a door wide open. Upon arrival the officer was greeted by a white German Shepherd, who said hello and invited him into the house. He knocked on the door and announced that he was with the police department. A male greeted him at the door where he advised him that his door was wide open. We then attempted to capture the friendly German Shepherd who was more interested in playing tag then going back inside.

12:01 p.m. - Agency Assistance - Police received a complaint of Dogs pulling down deer off of the Stoney Brook Road. Police located the injured animal but the dogs had already left the area. Police contacted a Vermont State Game Warden who responded and put down the injured animal. The game warden determined that it was coyotes that brought the deer down.

3:55 p.m. - Theft - Police confirmed the identity of a Norwich University student who had been the victim of a theft that had not been yet reported to police. Upon notification by the Northfield Police, the student was able to identify 5 gold rings that had been recovered in New Hampshire at a pawn shop. Northfield Police are working with the Plaistow Police Department on this case. An arrest is expected in this case.

December 17

10:21 a.m. - Theft - Police responded to Union Brook Road for a report of a theft of property. The complainant advised that during the night someone went to his camp, cut the propane line and stole the 100# fuel cylinder. The complainant advised that this was the second theft from his camp this year. Police are investigating.

December 18

11:14 a.m. - MV Complaint - Police received a complaint via 911 operator of erratic driving on VT Rte 12 in Riverton Vermont. Police located the suspect vehicle but did not observe any erratic operation. Police stopped the suspected vehicle and identified the operator. Police attempted to contact the complainant but the phone number given is not in service at this time. No further action taken.

11:45 a.m. - Controlled Substance Problem - Raymond P. Ferragamo, age 19 of Sandown, New Hampshire was issued a citation to appear in the Washington County District Court on 1-21-09 at 12:00 p.m. to answer the charge of possession of marijuana, under 1/2 oz. Northfield Police was notified by Norwich Security after they had caught Ferragamo using the marijuana in his dorm room in Hawkins Hall.

1:31 p.m. - Citizen Assist - A caller advised he was concerned because the delivery service had opened the door to his residence and left a package inside on the table. He felt this was intrusive. The officer located the delivery service and spoke with all parties. The practice to try to put the delivery inside is to alleviate the theft of the packages that are left unattended.

2:33 p.m. - MV Complaint - A traffic incident which occurred on North Main near Doyon Road. We received several calls advising that a van traveling South, crossed the center line then went across the northbound lane. That a pedestrian was walking and the van came fairly close to hitting him. An officer made contact with the driver who told him that the sun had blocked his vision and that he was avoiding something in the roadway.

6:29 p.m. - Suspicious Person/ Circumstance - Police were advised by a local business that a person had tried to purchase alcoholic beverages and produced a identification in the form of a drivers license that appeared not to be the customers. The ID was taken by the store staff and turned over to police. An investigation into who this person may be is continuing.

6:34 p.m. - Assault - Police responded to Patterson Hall on the campus of Norwich University to take a report concerning an assault between two female room mates. The complainant in this matter had a minor injury as a result of the fight. Charges are pending at this point and the university has been advised of this matter.

December 19

12:24 p.m. - Animal Problem - Police received a report of an animal complaint on Stony Brook Road. Police were advised that a dog was running loose in the area. Upon arrival, Police checked Stony Brook Road but were unable to locate the dog in question. No further calls were received.

11:38 p.m. - 911 Hangup Call - An officer responded to the area of 655 North Main Street for the report of a cell phone generated 911 call. Dispatch advised the cell phone was 911 only and the caller could not be reached. The officer checked several residences in the area. It was determined the caller was at the Northfield Ambulance Bay looking for assistance. The patient was transported to the hospital by members of the Northfield Ambulance service without incident.

11:54 p.m. - Agency Assistance - An officer responded to Dog River Drive for the report of a woman patient who had some cut type injuries. Upon arrival it was determined the injuries were self inflicted. A concerned neighbor drove the patient to the ambulance bay to be checked out. The patient was transported without further incident.

December 20

9:08 a.m. - Family Fight/Domestic – Police responded to Vine Street for a report of a family fight in progress. Upon arrival, Police located the individuals involved and separated them. Police learned that a verbal argument had ensued over childcare, which caused the Police to be called. Police assisted in mitigating the situation prior to departing the scene.

12:50 p.m. - Suspicious Person/ Circumstance - Police responded to a residence on South Main Street. A landlord advised of a suspicious circumstance that happened at one of his rental properties. Police were told that an oil tank, which had not been used for several months, was believed to be missing a quantity of oil. Police spoke with other tenants in the building to gather further information about the incident.

December 21

12:40 p.m. - Accident PD - Police responded to Vine Street for a report of a motor vehicle crash. Upon arrival, Police found that a parked motor vehicle had been struck. The vehicle was struck with enough force that it caused it to be pushed into another parked vehicle. The suspect vehicle and operator fled the scene. An investigation into the incident is underway. Anyone with information is urged to call the Police at 485-9181.

2:38 p.m. - Theft - Police received a report of a gas drive off from a VT RT 12S service station. Police were given a description of the vehicle, and were told that the vehicle was last seen heading south, but may have gone up VT RT 64. Police canvassed the area, but were unable to locate the vehicle. A BOL was given to surrounding Police agencies so they could check for the vehicle in the surrounding areas.

4:06 p.m. - Citizen Assist - Police responded to Kent Street for a report of a car that had slid into a brook. Police responded to the scene, where a local two company removed the vehicle. The operator of the vehicle denied needing a crash report, so no further action was taken.

December 22

8:24 a.m. - Suspicious Person/ Circumstance - Police received a reported of a suspicious circumstance on Water Street. Police are conducting an investigation into the alleged incident with the Vermont Department of Children and Families.

9:17 a.m. - Phone Problem /Harassment – A citizen called to report a problem with someone making threatening phone calls. The officer arranged to meet with the complainant and they did not keep their appointment.
