Northfield Police Report
December 23 1:17 p.m. - Suspicious Person/ Circumstance – Police received a complainant about a citizens driving. The complainant advised that the male in question continuously runs a stop sign and takes off at high rates of speed. The complainant was advised to come in and file a report with the Northfield Police Department on these incidents.
4:03 p.m. - Theft - A student of Norwich called to report that he was missing property from his dorm room. He had noticed this missing a couple of weeks ago, but was just calling the police to file a report. Information was taken.
4:36 p.m. - Juvenile Problem - Police responded to a complaint of an out of control juvenile on Union Brook Road. The child was being abusive and threatening to her parents and Washington County Mental Health advised her parents to bring her up or have the police transport her to the Central Vermont Hospital for screening. The juvenile chose to go up with her father.
December 24
8:59 a.m. - Suspicious Person/ Circumstance - Police received a complaint of a wallet that had been stolen or lost at the Grand Union. The wallet was located a short time later only the only thing missing was approximately $10.00 in change. The complainant wanted to report it in case others have had the same experience.
10:03 a.m. - Citizen Assist - A citizen of Northfield Came in to have a car seat installation performed. The car seat was not the right type for the infant and he will be back at a later date with the proper seat to get installed. Northfield Police have a nationally certified child seat technician and installations and car seat inspections are done free of charge for the public.
9:17 p.m. - Suspicious Person/ Circumstance - Police were advised by Norwich University Security of a possible missing student. Apparently the significant other called security and inquired if the student was still on campus as he had not been to her house yet in NY. Because the student did not have a cell phone the concerned party had no further contact. Police were able to make contact with the student by using Facebook and determined he was OK.
December 25
12:34 p.m. - Suspicious Person/ Circumstance - Police responded to the Elementary School for a report of shed being broken into. Police observed that the shed had been open for some time and that only outdoor children's toys were in the shed. Police contacted the school and was advised that it was not an issue. No further action taken.
6:32 p.m. - Citizen Assist - A Northfield citizen had contacted police concerning a problem with a 24 year old son who was temporally living in her home. Police spoke with the son as well as the mother and the situation was defused with an agreement that the son was going to his room for the rest of the night and will move out in the morning. There were no further problems.
December 26
5:07 p.m. - Theft - Police responded to Union Street for a report of a theft. Upon arrival, Police learned that a quantity of groceries were unlawfully taken from a parked motor vehicle.
December 27
8:13 p.m. - Accident PD - Police received a report of an accident on Highway 12 A near Lover's Lane. Due to the officer was on another accident he responded to the area. Upon arrival he found the location of the accident, but the vehicle had been removed. No further action required.
December 28
10:22 a.m. - Traffic Hazard - Police responded to VT RT 64 in reference to a complaint of a traffic hazard. Police were advised that a tractor trailer unit had become stuck on the roadway due to in-climate weather and poor road conditions, and was attempting to back down the road. Police responded and assisted the tractor trailer unit in backing down the hill. The tractor trailer unit was parked until the roadway was plowed.
2:51 p.m. - Animal Problem - Police responded to Union Brook Road for a report of an animal complaint. Police were advised that a canine was reportedly wandering into the travel portion of the highway. Police located the owner of the canine and expressed the concern over the dog wandering into the road, especially during in-climate winter weather. The owner advised he would keep the dog on a lead when he is not under close supervision.
4:09 p.m. - MV Complaint - Police responded to VT RT 12N for a motor vehicle complaint. Police were advised that due to poor road conditions, a vehicle had left the travel portion of the highway and had become a traffic hazard. Upon arrival, Police summoned North Main Service to remove the vehicle. While the vehicle was being removed, Police reduced VT RT 12N to one lane of travel.
5:13 p.m. - MV Complaint - Police received a report of a motor vehicle complaint on VT RT 64. Police were told that several vehicles had become stuck in the snow and were unable to make it up the hill. Police responded and located one vehicle which was stuck. The operator parked his vehicle at the shoulder of the roadway until a plow truck could come to plow and sand the roadway. No other vehicles were located.
7:21 p.m. - Animal Problem - A resident of West Hill road called to report a loose dog. Animal Control was notified of the complaint, however the caller was able to identify the dog owner prior to their arrival.
8:54 p.m. - Assault - A resident of Western Avenue came to the police station to report an assault which had occurred at a residence on Water Street. The office took a sworn statement from the complainant and photographed the complainant's injuries. The officer will speak with the accused and charges will be pending the continued investigation.
December 29
3:56 a.m. - Vehicle towed - A vehicle was parked in violation of the village ordinance on Depot Square. Because there was a snow storm and the streets needed to be plowed, the officer requested a wrecker. The vehicle was towed.
12:22 p.m. - Accident PI - Police responded to Chandler Road for a report of a motor vehicle crash with injuries. Upon arrival, Police determined the vehicle left the roadway and struck a telephone pole. The operator and a passenger were treated and transported to the hospital by EMS. The vehicle was uninsured and therefore the operator was issued a ticket for failing to have insurance. A crash report was also completed.
3:02 p.m. - DLS - Police arrested Dawn Maloney, 49 of Northfield Falls, VT for Crimanal-DLS. Police learned that Maloney's privilege to operate a motor vehicle was under criminal suspension due to a DUI conviction. Police observed Maloney operating her motor vehicle on North Main Street and Mill Street, and she was subsequently taken into custody with incident. Maloney was cited to appear at court on 2-11- 09 at 12:30.
4:01 p.m. - Traffic Hazard - Police responded to VT RT 64 for a report of a traffic hazard. Police were advised that two tractor trailer units had become stuck on the snowy and icy roads. Police responded and provided traffic control.
4:58 p.m. - Accident PD - Police responded to Water Street for a report of a motor vehicle collision. Upon arrival, Police found that a vehicle had traveled off of the road and struck a small pole. The vehicle sustained minor damage as a result of the collision. North Main Service responded and removed the vehicle. A crash report was completed for the operator.
5:35 p.m. - Family Fight/Domestic - Police responded to a residence on Water Street in reference to a family fight. Officers learned that after an argument ensued between a mother and her daughter, the daughter assaulted the mother. The juvenile was in the custody of Dept. of Children and Families so they were notified of this incident. The juvenile was charged with assault and placed at Woodside Juvenile Detention Center.
11:24 p.m. - Burglary - An officer was contacted by a resident from Lovers Lane of Northfield. She had heard an noise and when she yelled out she could see someone leaving from her door area very quickly. She gave a description of the unannounced visitor and a vehicle. If anyone sees anything suspicious, please call the police immediately 485-9181. Please keep your homes locked and secured as well as the vehicles parked in your driveway.
