Northfield Police Report

December 30

10:25 a.m. - Accident PD

Police responded to Cumberland farm in Northfield Vermont for a report of a vehicle running into the fuel pumps. The operator stated that her brakes failed, she was unable to stop, and that she struck the fuel pump. No fuel was spilled and the operator was not injured. The vehicle was towed by North Main Service and there was a

estimated combined damage of $3500.00.

11:14 a.m. - Accident PD

Police responded to a report of

vehicle into the guardrails. When police arrived, they discovered that the vehicle had slid slowly into the rails causing very minor damage to the vehicle and no damage to the rails. The operator was driving a rear wheel drive with summer tires on. The vehicle was towed to a better portion of the road by

Baroffios garage.

4:01 p.m. - Agency Assistance

Police responded to North Main Street in Northfield by request of Vermont Department of Fish and Wildlife to put down an injured deer. Police located the deer and observed that it had two broken front legs. The deer was dispatched without any incident.

December 31

8:36 a.m. - Accident PD

Police received a complaint of damage to a vehicle that occurred sometime during the week. The complainant advised that she discovered that her vehicle had been hit when she attempted to open her front passenger side door and it would not open. The complainant advised that it worked fine the Sunday before. The complainant advised that she did not know where and when it had been hit.

12:47 p.m. - Accident PD

Police responded with Northfield Fire and Rescue to a reported snowmobile into a tree off of Rte. 12 South. The operator bumped a tree cracking a piece on her sled causing very minor damage. The operator was not injured and did not want to file a report. The sleds were loaded onto a trailer and the riders were leaving when we arrived. No further action taken.

1:20 p.m. - Threatening

Police received a complaint from a citizen of threatening phone calls. The complainant advised that she has received two phone calls that have been made to her by an anonymous caller threatening harm to her and her family. The complainant advised that she believes that it is work related. Police advised the complainant on the steps she needs to take to continue with the complaint.

2:02 p.m. - MV Complaint

Police received a complaint of

vehicle operating all over the road. The vehicle was reported driving into the oncoming lane of traffic. The vehicle is registered to an elderly couple of Northfield. Police will be contacting the operator to find out what the situation is.

2:17 p.m. - Theft - Police received a complaint of theft of service. The complainant advised that he was contacted to tow out a vehicle that had gone off the road in the Devils Washbowl in Moretown VT. The complainant advised the the male gave him a fake name and address. The complainant knew the individual from school and charges are going to be filed for theft of service.

2:58 p.m. - Accident PD

Police responded to Little Northfield Road for a one vehicle accident into a tree. There were no reported injuries. However, the female passenger was transported to the Central Vermont Hospital because she was having a asthmatic event. The vehicle sustained approximately $9000.00 in damages and was towed by North Main Service. Northfield Police was assisted by Northfield Fire and Barre Town EMS.

5:13 p.m. - MV Complaint

Police responded to Dog Wood Glen for a report of people operating unregistered vehicles, and doing donuts in the parking lots. Police did not locate any vehicles doing donuts and there was no sign of any having been done in the lots. No further action taken.

10:54 p.m. - Suspicious Person/ Circumstance - Police responded to the area of North Main Street for a report of multiple gunshots and or fireworks. Police responded to the area of the slaughter house and was unable to locate any disturbance. A patrol of the area was conducted during the rest of the shift and no further complaints or problems were reported.

11:16 p.m. - Juvenile Problem - Police responded to the area of 12A for a group of teenagers who had left a residence on foot and had not been given permission to leave the residence. The juveniles were located and identified by police. The juveniles advised they were heading to another friends home for the rest of the evening. Police did check to insure the juvenile did go to the location indicated.

January 1, 2010

7:44 p.m. - Suspicious Person/ Circumstance - Police responded to the campus of Norwich University, Kreitzberg Arena concerning a contracted parking enforcement officer being injured by a motorist. An investigation is underway concerning the operation of a motor vehicle in a manner that required the traffic officer to jump out of the way to prevent being hit and upon doing so the right hand of the traffic officer came into contact with the vehicle.

January 2

9:01 a.m. - Theft - Police received a report of a theft complaint from Slate Avenue. Police are investigating further.

January 3

9:01 a.m. - MV Complaint - Police received a report of a motor vehicle complainant on South View Drive. Police were advised by dispatch that a vehicle had struck and damaged a residential mailbox. Police spoke with the complainant who advised that the operator of the motor vehicle

had come back to the residence and made arrangements to repair the damages to the mailbox.

4:20 p.m. - MV Complaint - Police received a report of a motor vehicle complaint from Plaza Drive. Police were advised that a parked motor vehicle had been struck unbeknownst to the operator. The operator had left the area, but noticed the damage upon return to his residence. The other vehicle failed to stop and leave appropriate information for the operator,

and left the scene.

January 4

11:19 a.m. - Theft - Police responded to Belknap Street for a report of a retail theft. Subsequent investigation led to the arrest of Gary Smith, age, 39, of Northfield, VT for retail theft. It was found that Smith left the retail mercantile without paying for merchandise. Smith was issued a citation to appear at court on 2-18- 10 and was taken into custody by the VT Department of Corrections for a probation violation.

12:14 p.m. - Non-sufficient Funds Check – Police responded to a North Main Street mercantile for a report of a bad check. Upon arrival, Police found that a local individual had written a check upon a closed account. Police will be investigating the incident further.

12:26 p.m. - Trespassing - Police responded to Cross Street for a trespassing complaint. Upon arrival, it was determined that someone had gained access to a building and a vandalism was committed. Police examined the crime scene and gathered several pieces of potential evidence; including fingerprints. An investigation into the incident is underway, including an examination of the fingerprints by the Vermont Crime Lab.

12:35 p.m. - Non-sufficient Funds Check - Police received a report of a bad check from a North Main Street establishment. Police found that three checks had been cashed by the same individual over a 4 month period. Two of the checks were returned for insufficient funds, and the third had been returned due to the account having been closed. Police are investigating further and an arrest is forthcoming.

January 5

8:22 a.m. - Suspicious Person/ Circumstance - An officer responded to a Main Street restaurant for the report of some suspicious activity which had occurred over-night. The officer spoke with the owner who voiced his concerns regarding a former employee.

10:24 a.m. - Theft - Police received a report of a theft complaint from Bailey Road. Police were told that a package had been reportedly delivered by UPS, but the package was never received by the complainant. A report was generated with UPS for the missing parcel, and an investigation into the theft has been started.
