Varsity Girls Knock Off Twinfield 37 - 34
Photo by Bill Croney, The Northfield News The Lady Devil's Emma Lamson pops in two of her eight fourth quarter points that helped Williamstown upset undefeated Twinfield 55-54. Emma led the Lady Devil's scorers with ten points but it was a total team effort that led to the Blue & White Girl's fifth win of the season.
The Williamstown Girl’s only had one game last week. But what a game it was! The Lady Devils knocked off previously undefeated Twinfield 37-34 before a capacity crowd at the high school gym. The noise was deafening and the play was intense as the noise as both teams gave it everything they had.
Williamstown fell into a 16-7 hole after Twinfield went on a short 4-0 run early in the second quarter but The Lady Devils battled back and went on a 9-0 run of their own and tied the game at 16 with :40 left in the first half. But a jumpshot by Twinfield’s Kayla Potter with six seconds to go let the Lady Trojans take an 18-16 lead into the intermission.
Twinfield advanced that lead to 22-16 early in the third but the Lady Devils were beginning to get on the right track. Their defense and rebounding stepped up. And, when Brittney Martin hit a three point play Williamstown was back on top 23-22 with just over two minutes to go in the third. Sarah Bailey and Beth Carrier each hit shots in the closing minutes of the third and Williamstown took a 27-24 lead heading into the final stanza.
Each team scored 10 points in the fourth quarter and there were four ties and two lead changes over the first seven minutes of the last quarter. The Lady ‘Devils Emma Lamson decided that Williamstown just wasn’t going to lose this one. She poured in eight of her team high ten points in the final frame and powered the Lady
Devils to the win. But she had a little help. Emma poured in short jumper with 1:06 left to put Williamstown up 36-34. Then Brittney Martin hit a free throw to make it a three point Blue & White lead. But the roller coaster ride wasn’t quite over. Twinfield had a chance for three point attempt and a tie in the closing seconds but the Lady Devil’s defense shut it down.
Many mental images come to mind about this game: Brittneys’ free throw to make it a three point game with :40 left, Emma’s calm presence under the hoop as she hit big basket after big basket in the fourth quarter Beth Carrier’s jumpshots that she hit when the Lady Devil’s needed them most, Sarah Bailey’s calm leadership, and most of all “Lulu” Perry wrestling for possession of the ball with Twinfield players under the Williamstown basket. And the ever present KB, Kristin Brown, being everywhere and doing everything necessary to gain a win.
“In the first half I thought we came out a little rattled.but in the second half things went pretty much like I expected, “Lulu” coming in played great in the second half. Emma obviously decided we were not going to lose the game. Great poise by our younger players,” said coach Sid Sweet..
Williamstown got scoring from six players and a great overall effort by everybody. Emma Lamson had 10 points, and Beth Carrier added nine while Brittney Martin followed with six.
Lulu” Perry and Sarah Bailey each contributed five points and Heather Goner rounded out the Lady Devil’s scoring with a basket for two. With the win the Lady Devils improve to 5-4 and will be at South Royalton this Saturday, Jan 16, for a 2:30 p.m. game.
