JANUARY 24 TO 30

Jan. 24: Sunday at 4 p.m.,

Live From Lincoln Center” presents the celebrated violinist Joshua Bell performing in the intimate Stanley H. Kaplan Penthouse. Some outstanding musical guests are scheduled to join him, including Kristin Chenoweth, Sting, Chris Botti and Marvin Hamlisch. This program also airs latenight at 1 a.m. on Jan. 21.

At 8 p.m., “Nature” presents a cinematic year in the lives of majestic bald eagles along a breathtaking stretch of the Mississippi River.

At 9 p.m., “Masterpiece Classic” debuts the latest adaptation of Jane Austen’s “Emma.” Romola Garai and Jonny Lee Miller star in this lavish, funny production. In part one of three, rich, beautiful and selfdeluded Emma Woodhouse thinks herself the perfect matchmaker.

Jan 25: Monday at 7:30 p.m. on Vermont Public Television’s

Profile,” Fran Stoddard talks with Maj. Gen. Michael Dubie, the Vermont National Guard’s adjutant general. He is in charge of the Guard’s largest deployment since World War II, as 1,500 soldiers go to Afghanistan.

At 9 p.m., “Wyatt Earp: American Experience” premieres. Popular fictions about him belie the complexities of a man whose life is a lens on politics, justice and economic opportunity on the American frontier in the late 1800s.

At 10 p.m., a PBS pilot program “Sound Tracks: Music Without Borders” explores world music in exotic lands and cultures. Featured are Afrobeat creator Fema Kuti, Portuguese Fado diva Mariza and many more. The producers are seeking feedback, and VPT viewers are invited to send comments to view @vpt.org. The program will repeat Jan. 27 at 8 p.m. on VPT’s World channel.

At 11:30 p.m., “Charlie Rose” offers another conversation with some of the world’s most fascinating people. Vermont Public Television repeats the evening broadcasts the following weekday at 1:30 p.m.

Jan. 26: Tuesday at 8 p.m.,

Nova” presents “The Incredible Journey of the Butterflies.” Every year, 100 million monarch butterflies set off across North America, flying 2,000 miles to a remote area high in the mountains of Mexico.

At 9 p.m., “Rare Bird” tells the story of David Wingate, who, in 1951 at age 15, helped solve the mystery of the cahow. The bird had been thought extinct for centuries. Now, it faces the threat of global warming.

At 10 p.m., “Frontline” repeats an investigation of the credit card business called "The Card Game." It airs just weeks before Washington enacts new regulations on the massive consumer loan industry.

Jan. 27: Wednesday at 8 p.m., “The Tavis Smiley Report” presents a portrait of U.S. Secretary of State Hillary Clinton as she completes her first year as the country’s chief diplomat. Smiley was granted exclusive access, accompanying Clinton on a special diplomatic mission.

At 9 p.m. “The National Parks: America’s Best Idea” begins a weekly encore.

Jan. 28: Thursday at 7:30 p.m., food lovers mourning the end of Gourmet magazine can console themselves with the new series “Gourmet’s Adventures With Ruth.” Editor-inchief Ruth Reichl and guests travel the globe to experience local foods and traditions. In the first episode, she and Frances McDormand harvest their own dinner in Tennessee. The programs also air Saturdays at 1:30 p.m. on VPT and Sundays at 8 p.m. on VPT’s Create channel.

At 8 p.m., the monthly “VPT Public Square” special looks at the cost of college. As the price of education spirals further out of reach for many Americans, prospective students and their families grapple with whether and where to pursue a degree. The call-in program looks at some innovative solutions popping up in Vermont. Kristin Carlson hosts.

Jan. 29: Friday at 10 p.m. “Independent Lens” presents “Hip-Hop: Beyond Beats and Rhymes.” This in-depth look at machismo in rap and hip-hop finds creative genius, poetic beauty and mad beats collide with misogyny, violence and homophobia.

Jan 30: Saturday at 10 p.m. on “Austin City Limits,” Steve Earle pays tribute to legendary Texas troubadour Townes Van Zandt. Kris Kristofferson follows with tunes from his latest release.

At 11 p.m. on “Soundstage,” The Fray perform songs from their 2009 release. At midnight on “Sierra Center Stage,” Sonia Dada performs.
