Martin Luthur King, Jr.

TO THE EDITOR: THE NORTHFIELD NEWS TO MOST STUDENTS Martin Luther King Jr. Day isn’t a day of remembrance to a man who fought for what he believed in and what he thought was right. To most students, it is just another vacation day or an extra weekend day. On that day I highly doubt that any student sits back and thinks of who he was, what he did, and why he did it! I know that for many years now I have thought of it as a screw off day, until my teachers reminded me of Martin Luther King Day and that we have it off. Then it hit me. What is the point of giving students a day off for this holiday? By letting students stay home and sleep late and party or whatever else, it’s not strengthening their knowledge of this great man. It’s simply doing the opposite.

If the schools truly care about students giving him the respect and remembrance that he deserves, then why not have school? I think that we should all have school and do schoolwork and activities revolving around Martin Luther King. Teachers could bring students to different places around the city/town doing community service. Give back to your city/town all the things that he fought so hard for and wanted people to do, or at least try.

I recommend that on Monday, Jan. 18th, everyone remembers Martin Luther King Jr. and why we have a national holiday in his memory.
