Blue Devil Girls Come Up Short At S. Royalton

By BILL CRONEY

It’s been an up and down couple of weeks for Williamstown Girl’s basketball. First, they upset undefeated Div. IV powerhouse Twinfield, then they knocked off. Highly regarded Div. III Northfield (game story on sports page), So when the Blue & White Girl’s machine rolled into South Royalton last Friday night things looked good. Then the wheels fell off! The Lady Devils came out on the short end of a 44-33 score and their record fell to 6-5.

“We were flat. We didn’t bring the usual team energy that we bring to the game. They just out-played us.” Said Williamstown coach Sid Sweet.

“We never could get on track . We just couldn’t get the ball in the hoop and we only shot 4 for 19 from the free throw line,” he said.

Williamstown jumped out to a 9-4 lead in the first quarter but the Lady Royals went on a 5-0 run and it was all even at 9 after the first quarter. It would be downhill from there for the Lady Devils. By Halftime South Royalton had pulled out to a five point spread at 20-15.

They headed into the final stanza with The Lady Royals still up by five and with two and a half minutes to go it was still competitive with So Ro up by six. But Williamstown had to foul and in the last two and a half minutes South Royalton went 6 for 8 from the line to seal the

44-33 victory. Emma Lamson led the Williamstown scorers wit 11 points while Kristin Brown (KB to this reporter) had eight and Brittney Martin was close on her heels with seven points.

“South Royalton shot the ball very well. They had seven players that scored and they hit five three pointers,” coach Sweet said.

After the game the coach had some wise advice for his players. “ I told the girls that you will have nights like this. You have to think about what happened and why and what you can do to turn it around.”

As the Bus headed north into the night it was full of very pensive players. “ The bus ride home was extremely quiet,” coach Sweet said. “ And as a coach I think that’s a good thing. It means they were thinking about what happened and thinking about what to do about it.”

The Lady Devils return to action This Saturday afternoon when they host Cannan in a 2:30 p.m. game.
