The Williamstown High Boy’s basketball team picked up an impressive pair of wins last week. On Wednesday they traveled to Stowe and grabbed a 68=39 victory over the Raiders and on Friday they were in South Royalton where they rolled over the Royals by a 58- 32 count. The wins moved the Blue Devil Boy’s record to 12- 1.
South Royalton gave the Blue Devils some trouble in their first meeting earlier this year but this time around Williamstown jumped out to a
13-1 lead on their way to a halftime advantage of 31-13, The full court trap was working to perfection on defense and on offense the usual suspects contributed for the Blue Devils. Ray Burgos hit for 15 points including a 3 for 3 effort from three point land. Steven Manwaring had a double-double of 12 points and 11 rebounds. Troy Laughlin was in double figures and also added five blocked shots and Johnny Earls had 3 steals and 5 assists to go along with his seven point night and Kyle Benway was big off the Blue Devil Bench. He added nine points and picked off five rebounds in his sixth man role “Kyle has given us quality minutes off the bench of late,” said ‘Devils coach Jack Carrier. “ He comes off the bench and we don’t miss a thing. He’s actually our sixth starter.”
When the bus finally rolled back north on that dark and not so cold night the Blue Devil’s had rolled up their 12th win of the season with the 58-32 thrashing of the Royals.
Last Wednesday it was off to Stowe and in front of a very small home crowd the “Devils in general and Ray Burgos in particular put on another impressive performance. Williamstown blasted Stowe by a 68-39 score and iafter the first four minutes it wasn’t that close. “We got off to a slow start. It was 8-8 after four minutes. But once we got going I told Ray to look for a hole, and boy did he find one,” coach Carrier said.
The second quarter belonged to Ray Burgos as he dropped in 17 of his game high 30 points in the second stanza. Inside or outside, and 3 for
3 from outside the arc. It didn’t matter to Burgos.
Thanks to team defense, the rebounding of Troy Laughlin (13 points, 12 rebounds) and Steven Manwaring (11 points, 13 rebounds) and the scoring of Ray Burgos the Blue Devils had opened up a 29-10 lead by halftime.
It was all downhill from there. Coach Carrier wanted to mention the rebounding of Steven Manwaring. “Steven’s board work over the last few games has helped out tremendously,” said the coach. A combination of total team defense and some stellar individual performances sent the Blue Devils home with the impressive 68-39 win over Stowe.
The Blue Devils will be back in action this Saturday when they host Cannan in a 2:30 p.m. match up.
