Cadets Slip Past Rivier In Men’s Basketball Away Game

Photo by Bill Croney, The Northfield News NASHUA, N.H. - Sophomore F Antonio Davis posted a doubledouble with a game-high 23 points and 10 rebounds to help the Norwich University men's basketball team outlast Rivier, 75-74, in overtime Thursday evening in a Great Northeast Athletic Conference (GNAC) contest played at the Muldoon Center.

Freshman G Ryan Williams knocked down five three-pointers and dropped 19 points off the bench for the Cadets, who overcame a nine-point second half deficit to earn the victory. Junior G Cori Boston added 18 points and nine rebounds, while junior G/F Jaren Jeffcoat chipped in nine points and 10 assists. Freshman G Nickolai Havoutis dished out a gamehigh six assists for NU.

Norwich (11-6, 6-4 GNAC) ended the second half on a 12-4 run to turn a 65-57 deficit at the 6:46 mark into a 69-69 tie after regulation time expired.

The Cadets scored the first three points of the overtime, but a three-pointer by Nick Bean knotted the score at 72-all with 2:14 remaining. Three free throws by Norwich gave the visitors a 75-72 advantage with 17 seconds remaining, but a driving lay-up by Will Snider made it 75-74 moments later. The Raiders then stole the ensuing inbounds pass, but they missed two potential game-winning three-pointers in the final six seconds and Norwich was able to escape with the win. Rivier jumped all over Norwich to start the game, taking an 11-2 lead less than four minutes into the first half. Seven straight points by the Cadets closed the gap to 11-9, but five unanswered points by the Raiders made it 16-9 at the 11:29 mark. NU responded with a 15-6 run over the next six minutes to take its first lead of the game (24-22) with 5:52 remaining before halftime. Rivier closed the half on a 15-6 run of its own to carry a 37-30 lead into the intermission.

Brian Troy led Rivier in the first half with 12 points, hitting four three-pointers. Williams paced the Cadets with nine points in the opening stanza.

Norwich began the second half on a 9-3 spurt to trim Rivier's lead to one point (40-39) less than four minutes into the frame. The Raiders responded with a 10-2 spurt to extend their lead to nine points (50-41) with 13:50 to play. A three-pointer by Bean capped the run, and whipped the Rivier crowd into a frenzy. Rivier was able to keep its lead in excess of four points for the next seven minutes until Norwich's game-ending run.

Don Poitras led Rivier (4-13, 1- 9 GNAC) with a team-high 18 points and a game-best 11 rebounds. Luke Brownell and Troy both finished with 12 points for the Raiders, while Bean added 11. Norwich was able to win despite shooting just 33.3 percent (26-of-78) from the field. Rivier, meanwhile, hit only 39.1 percent (27-of-69) of its shots from the floor. The Cadets outrebounded the Raiders, 49- 44. The rebounding edge helped NU outscore Rivier, 22-6, in second chance points.
