The Blue Devil Girl’s basketball team improved their record to 9-5 as they ran off two impressive wins last week. At Cabot Williamstown tamed the Huskies 55-22 and on Saturday afternoon they ran past Craftsbury 76-35.
At Cabot everybody got into the act as the Lady ‘Devils broke out to a
28-14 halftime lead and put it in cruise control the rest of the way for a 55-22 win. Brittney Martin led the Williamstown scorers with 10 points and Kristin Brown, Emma Lamson and Beth Carrier each chipped in with seven as the Blue & White Girls swooped to the 33 point victory.
“We got a total team effort. Everyone chipped in. It is a small court and our speed was impressive. Off the bench, Brittany Farnham was a ball of fire out there. She had only two points but she got six steals and pulled down nine rebounds,” said coach Sid Sweet.
At home against Craftsbury on Saturday it was more of the same. Nine of eleven players that saw action scored and Williamstown pulled away in the second quarter to coast to a76- 35 win over the Chargers. It didn’t start out easy. The game was tied at 13 after one quarter. “I shook up the starting lineup for this game. I told all the kids they would have a chance to be a starter at least once in the season and this let me make good on my promise to some of them,” coach Sweet said.
In the second quarter Brittney Martin and Beth Carrier went to work.
The dynamic duo lit it up for 15 of the team’s 23 second quarter points and by halftime the Lady Devils had a comfortable lead of 36-19. ‘The full court press really worked today. The defense was awesome. All things hinged on the defense” coach Sweet said. “We had a total of 28 team steals.”
Individually. Brittney Martin tossed in 16 points, grabbed nine rebounds and had seven steals while “Lulu” Perry poured through 12 points and had sev- en rebounds as well as 4 steals and several blocked shots. Kristin Brown had her usual outstanding game with 10 points and coach Sweet wanted to mention Beth Carrier’s effort. “Beth play extremely well. She had ten points and was lighting them up,” the coach said. The Craftsbury game marked a turning point for the Lady ‘Devils.
“This was the first game where we did not let the score dictate our play. When you get way ahead it’s easy to let up and run out the string. We didn’t do that and that is an important thing as we look ahead to the playoffs. We Worked on our game for the
full 32 minutes,” said coach Sweet. The Blue Devil Girl’s will be at Cannan this Saturday Feb. 6 and return home for Senior night next Monday, Feb. 8, when they host Stowe. Sr. Night will also be a tribute to breast Cancer awareness as the Williamstown coaches will dress in pink and the team will feature a symbol yet to be determined.
