The Williamstown Boy’s basketball team racked up the miles this week and came away with two impressive seventy point road wins to show for them. Last Friday the Blue Devil Boy’s traveled to Cabot and rolled over the Huskies 85-15 and on Saturday they made the three hour bus trip to Cannan and demolished the Eagles 90-20. With the pair of wins the Blue Devil Boy’s season record stands at 17-1.
Against Cabot the powerful Blue Devils had everything in working order early. “We really had the defense working and everything went our way,”
said coach Jack Carrier. By halftime Williamstown had burst out to a 57-6 lead on their way to the 85-15 win. The most entertaining moment of the evening came in the first quarter when Troy Laughlin picked up steal near half court and stormed in to throw down a two hand jam.
Everybody in the Williamstown lineup that played found their way into the scorebook led by a twenty point from Troy Laughlin. And that twenty point effort was recorded in just over two quarters of play. Ray Burgos threw in 15 points, grabbed eight rebounds, had eight steals and added seven assists for his night’s work as the Blue Devil’s put things in Cruise control for the 85-15 win.
It was right back to work on the next day for the “Devil Boys. They boarded the bus at 9 a.m. and headed off on a three hour bus ride to Cannan, No bus legs on this trip. The Boy’s had to sit through the seemingly endless ride and then wait for the Girl’s game to be played before taking the court but their game didn’t suffer a bit. If one word can be used to describe the Blue Devil’s performance that word would be dominating. For the second game in a row the Blue Devils racked up a 70 point victory. “We didn’t press after the first few minutes but we need to keep our defense sharp with the playoffs coming up. I don’t want the guys to get into bad defensive habits or get lazy or complacent on defense,” said coach Carrier.
An interesting note about the game is that all five seniors that played (Ben Villa was on a college visit) scored in double figures. Ray Burgos had a tremendous performance, leading the game’s scorers with 27 points many of which came off steals of from bombs beyond the 3 point arc. Ray became the mad bomber as the launched 5 successful three point shots.
In addition to his scoring he had 13 steals and six assists. Troy Laughlin had a 14 point, 8 rebound, and six steal performance. Steven Manwaring tossed in 14 points and grabbed nine rebounds while Johny Earls had 12 points to go along with his eight steals and six assists.
Nick Gagnon had his best game of the season scoring all 11 of his points in the first half. “Nick came out hot. He really played well,” said coach Carrier.
