Photo by Mary Comiskey, The Northfield News The night was full of magic for the residents of Mayo Manor. The women were radiant, attired in their finest attire. Each gentleman was handsomely dressed to suit the occasion. Add to the scene, ten Norwich Cadets in their formal dress uniforms. The ballroom awaited the guests. A live band provided lively music heavy with the wail of a saxophone that filled the air with familiar tunes. Each handsome couple prepared to make a grand entrance through an arch of swords. One by one, the smiling couples entered the splendidly decorated ballroom as their names were announced. Cameras flashed and recorded the moment that would be treasured for a long time. The guests proceeded to their tables to share conversation and fellowship with their partners and friends. When the last of the guests was seated, the festivities were opened with a toast given by Chris Scott, Mayo’s administrator.

The Valentine Ball has been a tradition at Mayo Manor for twenty years. It is a cooperative effort between Norwich University and the residence. This year Natalia Zajac, an international student from Poland, was the coordinator from Norwich University. The students are encouraged to give something back to the community. Her goal is to encourage lasting friendships between the Cadets and the residents. One Cadet said, "I run by here quite often. I’ve never stopped in. It is a great place. I’ll be back." His smiling partner just beamed.

A splendid buffet of choice delicacies had been prepared for the dancers. The night was young and the hearts were full of love. "If you have to live someplace, this is a great place to be," announced a silver haired beauty. The dance floor began to swing and sway to the music. Old memories filled the room. New memories were being made. It was a night to remember.
