Northfield Police Report

February 3

1:28 p.m. - Citizen Assist - Police responded to West Hill Road to take custody of a firearm for a citizen. The complainant did not want the firearm in her residence and she was afraid that it was not working properly. Police secured the weapon and it will be stored at the police department per the residents request.

6:46 p.m. - Unlawful Mischief - The duty officer was given a report of slashed tires. The victim requested an officer observe the damage and wanted the situation recorded.

February 4

1:34 p.m. - Animal Problem - Police responded to Highland Ave for a report of barking dogs. The complainant advised that the dogs had been out for a while and that the barking was disturbing him. Police located the animals and put them back in the residence. The home owner was not home and it appeared that a delivery had been made and that the dogs got out at that time. No further action taken at this time.

3:13 p.m. - Juvenile Problem - Police received a complaint of a threatening text message. The complainant advised that a juvenile female female threatened to burn down her house if some clothing that had been lent to her daughter was not returned. Police spoke with all the parties involved and their parents and the situation has been resolved.

4 p.m. - Sex Offense - Police received a complaint of a possible sexual assault that may have occurred several years ago. Police along with the department of Children and Family's will be investigating this incident.

4:30 p.m. - Citizen Dispute - Police received a complaint of a citizen dispute. The complainant advised that they are attempting to move out of their apartment and that their next door neighbor is making it difficult. The complainant's advised that the neighbor was outside swinging a stick around and yelling at them. The complainant's advised that this subject destroyed a blue plastic storage container that belonged to them with the stick.

February 5

1:511 a.m. - Agency Assistance - Police, Fire and Rescue responded to a resident reporting a chimney fire and that part of the roof was on fire and they were evacuating the residence. Upon arrival of the police one of the occupants reported that he was able to put out the fire on the roof and had also used a fire extinguisher down the chimney. Northfield Fire responded as well as Northfield Rescue. There were no injuries.

9:03 a.m. - Accident PD - Police responded to a two vehicle accident in front of 501 Rte. 12 South. There were no reported injuries and both vehicles sustained approximately $3,000.00 in damages. The complainant advised that he had pulled to the right side of the north bound lane due to having a flat tire. The complainant advised that while he was out changing the tire, that another vehicle side swiped his vehicle.

10:45 a.m. - Citizen Assist - Police stood by while some citizens moved out of their apartment. The tenants have been having issues with the next door neighbor but he was not home at this time. No further action taken.

11:17 a.m. - Agency Assistance - Police assisted the Vermont State Police execute a search warrant on Hallstrom Road. During the search an indoor marijuana grow operation was discovered.

12:09 p.m. - Agency Assistance - Police served a citizen with a subpoena to appear in the Orange County Court to testify for an assault that occurred in their county that he witnessed. Bradford Police Department requested that we serve the subpoena for them for an up coming criminal case. The paperwork work was served without incident.

3:14 p.m. - Citizen Assist - Police responded to Pleasant street for an unknown problem. The complainant advised that she could hear loud noises coming from the next door apartment. Police did not hear any noise but advised the complainant that they would ask them to keep it down. Police spoke with the tenants who just barely got home and they advised that the noise was not from them.

9:19 p.m. - Phone Problem /Harassment - Police took a complaint from a resident who advised that she was getting unwanted text messages and phone calls on her cell phone from someone who she did not know and would not stop after being asked to do so. Police contacted the individual by calling the phone number and left a voice message for that caller not to call anymore and to also contact the Northfield Police. There were no further problems.

10:51 p.m. - Noise Disturbance - Police responded to a tenants report of noise in an apartment block. Police conducted an investigation into the cause of the noise and spoke with a tenant living above the complainant concerning the noise that consisted of a base sound from a sound system as well as heavy walking across the floor. The tenant in question was advised of the situation. There were no further problems.

February 7

11:28 a.m. - Suspicious Person/ Circumstance - Police responded to Pleasant Street for a report of a suspicious circumstance. Upon arrival, Police met with the resident who advised that someone had been peeking into her windows and had complaints of loud noise next door. Police checked the interior and exterior of the residence and did not find anything amiss. The neighboring tenant was also quiet, and no noise was detected.

7:20 p.m. - Citizen Assist - A citizen brought in a piece of property that belonged to another individual. The officer took the property and will make contact with the owner to return it to him.

8:18 p.m. - Unlawful Mischief - Police responded to a residence on S. Main St. for a report of a vandalism of a motor vehicle. Upon arrival the officer observed the front windshield of the vehicle broken. The complainant advised a friend of his had broken the window after an argument ensued over the Super Bowl. He requested a report be taken but did not want his friend charged. The officer took a report at the request of the victim.

10:12 p.m. - Assault - Police responded to a residence on Water St. for a family fight. It was determined that no assault had taken place. With the assistance of allied police agencies, the situation was resolved.

February 8

10:42 a.m. - Sexual Assault - Police received a report of a sex offense that had occurred in Northfield. Police are currently investigating the incident further with the assistance of the Sexual Assault Crisis Team, and have identified a possible suspect.

12:33 p.m. - Agency Assistance - Police responded to VT RT 12A to assist the Vermont State Police from the Royalton Barracks. Northfield Police were asked to 'BOL' for a vehicle involved in a burglary that had just taken place in Brookfield, and the vehicle was believed to be headed towards Northfield. A Northfield Police unit was on VT RT 12A at the time, and they canvassed the area. No contact with the suspect vehicle was made.

3:49 p.m. - Theft - Police received a report of a theft from Depot Square. Police were advised that a delivered UPS package had been taken from a retail mercantile, sometime in mid to late January. It was confirmed that the package had been delivered via UPS, so it was suspected that the package had been stolen. UPS was also notified of the theft.

4:01 p.m. - Suspicious Person/ Circumstance - Police investigated a suspicious circumstance on VT RT 12S. While on patrol, an officer observed the trunk of a parked motor vehicle to be left wide open, and unattended. The vehicle was left parked in a parking lot and was listed as "FOR SALE." Investigation showed that the owner had left the vehicle for a short period of time while changing a flat tire on it.

9:56 p.m. - Theft - Police responded to a local business for a retail theft that had just occurred. The suspect had left the store prior to the officer's arrival. However, police were able to locate the suspect a short time later who was still in possession of the stolen merchandise. The suspect was cited for Retail Theft on 3/25/10 in Washington County District Court.
