News Editorial On Vermont Yankee
TO THE EDITOR: THE NORTHFIELD NEWS YOUR EDITORIAL makes some good points, however I dispute a couple things said. Nobody knows the long term effects of tritium. Also nobody can say if some other long term effects will show up later, no studies to my knowledge.
On the solar power, I know something. I put in 24 panels in 2008 and they are actually efficient in the winter. The reflection off the snow helps concentrate the PV (photo-voltaic) sun rays. Our array makes over 100% of the electricity we use. We get more sun than Germany and Germany produces more solar electricity then any other country. That said if we spent the billions of dollars on solar farms and putting panels up on the roofs of schools and other public buildings we would not have to build another nuclear plant.
Your proposal to build another plant is costly. First it is expensive to build and expensive to decommission nuclear plants.
The cost of decommissioning Vt. Yankee should be on Entergy, they bought the plant knowing that the plant was going to have to be re-licensed or decommissioned in 2012. They have not put the money into the fund for that purpose and we tax payers of Vermont are going to be stuck with the bill. Then tell me the nuclear power is cheap. I don't think so.
