"Preserving Personal & Family History" at the library on March 11 at 6:30 p.m. with Amanda Kuhnert.

Amanda Kuhnert is a Vermont-based personal historian and professional writer who will speak about the value of preserving personal and family history and will offer ideas about how to tackle your own legacy project. We will talk in depth about oral history techniques as an exciting opportunity to record our stories, particularly given the communication challenges that many families and communities face in the 21st century. We will discuss the importance of sharing and saving our memories and values for the benefit of the next generation – while enhancing and deepening our relationships with family and community members today.

How many New Englanders know that there were POW camps in the Northeast during WWII? A Brother's Blood, the second book of the “New England Uncovered” reading/discussion series sponsored by the VT Humanities Council and the Friends of the Brown Public Library, takes place in northern Maine. It’s the story of one young German POW's death and its relationship to the death of a Maine native several years later. Do we ever know our neighbors and friends? This book exposes a darkness beyond the imagining of ordinary citizens in a small town.

A discussion of A Brother’s Blood will be held on Tuesday March 16th in the Northfield Community Room beginning at 7:00 p.m. Discussion leader and scholar Jim Schley, a graduate of Dartmouth and Warren Wilson College, is an editor, poet, and performer. He has edited the "New England Review," a literary quarterly, as well as several books.

You may have seen him perform with Bread & Puppet Theatre. He is executive director of the Frost Place, a museum and poetry center at Robert Frost's former home in Franconia, New Hampshire.

Get your copy of the book at the Brown Public Library. Wet, grey skies will help you create an atmosphere as you read this book. I found it a great read last week while the power was out!
