Williamstown's government comes to a crossroad next month at the special town meeting required by a petition to repeal the Town's manager form of government.

The Board of Selectmen set Saturday, April 10, as the date for the issue to be voted on by Australian ballot at the firehouse.

Last week Town Clerk Deborah Palmer told the selectmen that a petition rescinding the position of town manager, bearing the required number of signatures, was filed with her last month. She said that selectmen needed to set a date within the next 30 to 40 days for the special meeting.

Mike Sprano asked if there would be an informational meeting to provide the community with information on the differences between the positions of town manager and town administrator. He also asked if a yes vote would mean that the Town would "go to a town administrator" and a no vote would mean they would "keep the town manager.

Vice Chairman Larry Hebert said that a yes vote "just means no town manager," not the establishment of a town administrator. He said that the selectmen would then have to decide how to proceed.

Mr. Hebert said that because townspeople "have voted to have a town manager," it requires a town vote to rescind the position.

Selectman Rodney Graham said that he spoke with Kathy DeWolfe from the Secretary of State's office, and that she advised him that the unusual wording of the article was valid. Ms. Palmer said that she also checked with the Secretary of State's office and was told that the wording "was fine."
