Northfield Police Report
February 24
8:53 p.m. - Traffic Hazard - Police responded to a report of wires in the roadway. Police responded and were met by a work crew from Green Mountain Power who was in the process of investigating the problem. At no time was the downed wire a danger to the public as the line had been de-energized by the power company hours earlier.
10:34 p.m. - Accident PD - Police responded to a motor vehicle crash located in a private housing parking lot that involved a commercial plower and a resident of the housing complex. There were no injuries and minor damage. The plow was backing at the same time the resident was pulling around the plow
and contact was made between both vehicles. Alcohol was not a factor.
February 25
2:25 a.m. - MV Complaint - Police observed a vehicle parked on Depot Square in violation of the Winter Parking Ban. Because a snow storm was occurring and the streets needed to be plowed, the vehicle was ticketed and towed.
8:45 a.m. - Custodial Dispute
- While attempting to pickup a child after a visit with the other parent, the situation became unfriendly and confused. The parent came to the department to seek help to retrieve the child. The officer talked with parties involved and resolved the situation at the moment.
12:36 p.m. - Citizen Dispute - Police responded to Dog Wood Glen for a report of some sort of dispute. Police spoke with the complainant who advised that she had let a friend stay for a couple of days and that her friend attempted to move in. The complainant advised that she can not move in and that she has been asked to leave. The complainant is going to contact the police next time she shows up so that a trespass notice can be issued.
February 26
2:55 p.m. - Theft - Police received a complaint from Grand Union of an employee who has been stealing from them. The manager stated that they caught the employee on 2- 22-10 stealing groceries from Grand Union while she was working. The individual admitted to stealing several thousands dollars worth of groceries since the fall of 2009. Charges are pending further investigation.
February 27
2:51 a.m. - Assault - Police were called to the campus of Norwich University in reference to a complaint made by a student who advised he had been assaulted. The student assaulted received minor injuries as a result of being hit in the face causing a split lip. Police are investigating and are being assisted by Norwich University Security Officers.
2:53 a.m. - Theft - Police responded to a complaint concerning missing property from a resident. The resident advised that they had a party at their apartment and at the end of the party noticed that they were missing two cell phones and a lap top computer.
10:15 a.m. - Found Property - Police received property that was found on Water Street. A Vermont license plate was turned over to the Police after it was found laying in the roadway. Police have the license plate in their custody and will be returning it to the proper owners.
11:13 a.m. - Agency Assistance - Police received a request to assist the Vermont State Police. State Police requested assistance in the service of paperwork upon a Northfield resident. The paperwork was served without incident.
12:11 p.m. - MV Complaint - Police received a report of a motor vehicle complaint on VT RT 12N. Police were advised of a traffic violation committed by another motor vehicle. Police will be attempting to identify the vehicle and operator of the vehicle for further action to be taken.
11:41 p.m. - Alcohol Offense - An officer responded to a dorm at Norwich University at the request of campus staff. The officer was advised a student had purchased and then provided two other underage students with alcohol. The two minor students were issued referrals to the Washington County Teen Alcohol safety program. The other student was issued a citation to appear in court for Furnishing.
February 28 10:20 p.m. - Citizen Dispute - Police responded to a residence on Cross Street for a verbal dispute. Upon arrival the officers spoke with the complainant who advised he had been involved in a verbal dispute with another resident at that location. The complainant agreed to leave for the night and stay with a relative. The officers provided a ride to the complainant.
11:22 p.m. - Suspicious Person/ Circumstance - A resident of Pleasant Street called to request assistance from an officer. The caller believed someone was taking something from her apartment. When the officer responded, there was no one else in the apartment. The officer assisted the complainant as best he could.
March 1
8:17 a.m. - Citizen Dispute - Police responded to Cross Street for a citizen dispute. Upon arrival, Police found that an argument had escalated to the point where a window was smashed in a parked motor vehicle, and a firearm was brandished and allegedly pointed at individuals involved. Donald Works, age 56, of Northfield was charged with reckless endangerment for his involvement in the incident and was cited to appear at court on 4-15-10.
10:20 a.m. - Animal Problem - Police received a report of an animal complaint on Winch Hill Road. Police were told that a citizen was concerned about a dog that was running loose and chasing cars. It was feared that the canine would be hit by a car. Due to handling another call for service, Police were not able to immediately respond. A check of the area did not yield contact with the canine at the time.
12:07 p.m. - Animal Problem - A resident of Davis Avenue called to report that two of his pet Peking ducks were missing and another two had been injured. The officer spoke with a neighbor who had hosted a party over the weekend. The officer is in the process of speaking with a number of the guests to determine if any have any information regarding this incident.
12:09 p.m. - Suspicious Person/ Circumstance - Police responded to North Main Street for a report of a suspicious circumstance. Police were told that a female was seen stumbling down the roadway, carrying a bag. When Police arrived in the area, they were not able to locate the female. A check of the surrounding area did not yield any contact with the female.
2:30 p.m. - MV Complaint - Police received a report of a motor vehicle complainant on Barrows Road. Police were told that last week, the complainant's motor vehicle was struck by a snow plow on Barrows Road when it was parked at a service center for service. The complainant did not notice the damage until the vehicle was brought home later in the week. A police report was generated for the complainant.
8:57 p.m. - Theft - Police responded to a residence on Union Street for a report of a theft. After speaking with the complainant it was discovered that someone had entered the residence and stolen an amount of money while the residents were away. Police are investigating.
March 2
6:32 a.m. - Citizen Assist - Police responded to Sherman Avenue to assist a citizen. The elderly resident was having difficulty with her dog. The canine had not wanted to get in the vehicle and it was necessary to have the canine go with its owner. Police responded and provided the necessary assistance.
7:12 p.m. - Citizen Assist - A resident of Berlin came to the Northfield Police Station seeking some assistance. He advised he was a home provider for a patient of the Francis Foundation. His client had not been staying at home and was requesting her prescription medication. The complainant requested an escort due to her confrontational nature at times. I assisted the complainant deliver the medications, which was refused by the patient anyway.
8:57 p.m. - MV Complaint - A resident of Western Avenue called to report her vehicle had been taken by her son, who does not have a valid license. The vehicle was located a short time later. The operator was ticketed for driving while suspended. The complainant was brought to the scene to recover her vehicle.
