Sophie LeClerc Powers Norwich Past Plattsburg In NCAA Q-Final
PLATTSBURGH, N.Y. – Senior F Sophie Leclerc scored a pair of goals in the final two minutes of the third period to help lift the No. 10-ranked Norwich University women’s ice hockey team past No. 3-ranked Plattsburgh State University, 3-2, in an NCAA Tournament quarterfinal contest Saturday afternoon at Stafford Ice Arena.
Plattsburgh State (23-3-2) led 2-1 after Teal Gove scored at 14:02 of the third period, but Norwich rescued victory from the jaws of defeat as Leclerc potted a pair of unassisted goals within a span of 55 seconds late in the stanza.
Leclerc scored the game-tying goal at the 18:23 mark, and she then tallied the game-winning tally at the 19:18 mark.
The victory sends Norwich (19- 5-5) to the NCAA Frozen Four, where the Cadets will face off against No. 2-ranked Elmira College. The Soaring Eagles knocked off Trinity College, 2-1, in their quarterfinal game this afternoon.
Plattsburgh State opened the scoring at the 11:26 mark when Shannon Flaherty scored an unassisted marker. Norwich came back to tie the score at 1- 1 later in the first period when junior F Brittane Michaud scored at the 14:47 mark. The marker, which was Michaud’s eighth of the season, was assisted by freshman F Jacqueline Perez and senior F Sophie Leclerc.
Plattsburgh State held a 35-31 edge in shots for the game. Norwich junior G Cindy Fortin made 33 saves in between the pipes for the Cadets. Mandy Mackrell stopped 28 shots in the loss for the Cardinals.
