On-Line Poll Results

At www.thenorthfieldnews.com we asked respondents to answer the following poll question: SHOULD A NEW NUCLEAR POWER PLANT BE BUILT IN VERMONT?

The answers which were unscientific and were from anyone who ventured to answer the question on-line showed that 65 percent of those answering the poll favored building a new plant while 32 percent did not and 3 percent had no opinion.

The poll followed an editorial in the paper which appeared back in February where we took the position that the present Vermont Yankee plant should be relicensed only until such time as a new plant could be build adjacent to the old one and then the old plant closed. This, we opined, would allow the present work force to leave the old plant and move to work at the new one.

This is an idea that has only recently been proposed by a legislator from the Vernon area. We also believe that it would be favored by the union that represents the workers at the plant who have resisted closing the plant especially during the present recession when all jobs need to be maintained so far as possible.
