University Of Scouting Is Big Hit At Norwich
The University of Scouting was held on the campus of Norwich University on Saturday, March 20th. It is all day training for adults leaders working with troops and packs. The goal is to increase the effectiveness of the leaders. This is open to the dedicated volunteers who give their time to training the boys and girls in their program.
Approximately twenty-five instructors gave their time and expertise to teach about sixty different courses. The classes cover all aspects of pack and troop management, counseling, planning, leadership, and interesting activities. Volunteers are encouraged to work toward obtaining degrees from the University of Scouting. There are stringent requirements to earn a Bachelor Degree, a Master’s Degree, a Post-Graduate Certificate and a Doctoral Degree. The program includes a College of Cub Scouting, a College of Boy Scouting, a College of Commissioner Science, and a College of Venturing. There are strict requirements for each degree.
Dave Schuler, Dean of the University of Scouting, presented the degrees to the candidates. This year Steve Schneider was awarded his Ph.D. Many others received their degrees and awards. Todd LaValley, who is on the staff of the University, was recognized for his efficient attention to the needs of the staff of the Scouting University.
Council Executive, Rich Stockton, reminded the assembled of the importance of volunteerism. He reminded everyone that the Council is willing to do as much as possible to help the scout leaders be successful. He provided information about the Centennial Camporee that will be held during the first weekend in October at Camp Norris. Two thousand, five hundred scouts are expected to attend.
