Women's Lacrosse

Mollie Fitzpatrick tallied a game-high five goals to lead the Norwich University women’s lacrosse team to a 10-8 victory over Mount Ida College in a Great Northeast Athletic Conference (GNAC) contest Saturday afternoon.

Danielle Del Dotto added one goal and a game-high three assists for the Cadets (3-4, 3-1 GNAC). Kacey Abbriano chipped in one goal and one assist for NU.

The Mustangs tallied the first two markers of the game, but four straight goals by the Cadets gave Norwich a 4-2 lead midway through the opening half. The teams traded goals over the final five minutes of the stanza, and the Cadets took a 5-3 advantage into halftime.

Suzanne Whitaker scored off an assist from Del Dotto in the final minute of regulation, and Norwich was able to hold on for the victory.

NU goalkeeper Kellie Pickel made 11 saves for the Cadets in the victory.

Norwich held a 21-19 edge in shots, while Mount Ida enjoyed a 26-17 advantage in ground balls.

Baseball

The Cadets dropped a doubleheader Suffolk University in Great Northeast Athletic Conference (GNAC) action Saturday afternoon at a sun-drenched Garrity Field. The Rams took an 8-1 decision in the opening game, before roaring to a 14-0 victory in the nightcap.

Sleeman led Norwich’s sevenhit attack in the first game, producing a pair of base hits. David Maxfield added a double for the Cadets.

David Wygonski (1-1) took the loss for the Cadets, yielding eight runs on 12 hits over 6.1 innings of work. He has a nice outing going until running into trouble in the seventh inning. Don Dibastiani came on in relief and recorded the final two outs.

Suffolk did not waste any time jumping on top in the nightcap, scoring four runs in the first inning off of Norwich starter Austin Shaw (0-4).

Suffolk added two more runs in the top of the third inning to chase Shaw from the game.

The Rams tacked on two runs in the fourth inning before blowing the game wide open with a six-run fifth inning. Five of Suffolk’s runs in the fifth were unearned due to three Norwich fielding errors in the frame.

Norwich managed just two base hits in the second game with Sleeman and Rob Knox recording singles. Suffolk smacked 17 hits in the nightcap, with nine of them going for extra bases.

Brad Hudson, who came on in relief of Shaw, went 4.2 innings and allowed just two earned runs. He posted two strikeouts and did not walk a batter.

Men's Lacrosse

Springfield College defeated Norwich University, 21-2, in a Pilgrim League men’s lacrosse contest on a beautiful Saturday afternoon at Stagg Field.

The victory snaps a threegame losing skid for Springfield, and boosts the Pride’s record to 3-4 (1-0 Pilgrim) The Cadets, who have dropped two straight games, fall to 3-3 (0-1 Pilgrim).

The Pride dominated the game from the opening whistle. For the game, Springfield outshot Norwich, 68-8, and the Pride held a 57-36 advantage in ground balls. Springfield also had a great day in the face-off “X” as it won 18-of-26 draws. Springfield poured in the game’s first five goals to take command of the contest.

Norwich scored its lone goal of the first half with 1:52 remaining in the opening period as Patrick Sikora fired home a goal after dodging free at the top of the box.

The Pride continued to apply the pressure in the second quarter as it pumped in five unanswered goals to go into halftime with an 11-1 lead.

Springfield scored 10 unanswered goals to start the second half as it netted five goals in both the third and fourth quarters.

Kyle Marzeoti closed out the scoring as he netted Norwich’s only second half marker with just over two minutes to play in regulation.

Norwich goalkeeper Nathan Proctor made 23 saves in the contest despite giving up 21 goals for the Cadets.
