Northfield Police Report

March 31

1:38 a.m. - MV Complaint Police received a report of a motor vehicle complaint on VT RT 64. Police were advised of a vehicle operating erratically, and passed another motor vehicle unsafely. The registration of the vehicle was obtained by the caller and forwarded to the Police Department for further action.

1:25 p.m. - Citizen Assist Police assisted a Union Street citizen in reference to a possible 'scam' via the internet. Though no crime had been committed, Police referred the citizen to the Federal authorities because the individual initiating the scam was from overseas. Northfield Police did take note of the information in the event any other complaints are received locally.

3:10 p.m. - Juvenile Problem Police responded to Vine Street for a report of a juvenile problem. Upon arrival, Police canvassed the area but were unable to locate anything suspicious.

3:48 p.m. - Accident PD Police responded to Turkey Hill Road for a report of a motor vehicle collision. Upon arrival, Police found that a single car was involved in the collision. The vehicle was backing down the roadway and inadvertently backed off of the road due to the soft shoulders on the roadway. Police completed a crash report for the operator and North Main Towing Service removed the vehicle.

11:25 p.m. - Alcohol Offense Police stopped a vehicle on South Main Street for defective equipment. At the time of the stop, police detected an odor of intoxicants emitting from the vehicle. The driver who was under 21 had a BAC .028%, and his passenger who was under 21 had a BAC .027%. The passenger that was 21 years of age had a BAC. 009%. The operator received a Vermont Civil Violation complainant for having a BAC of .020% or more.

April 1

7:45 a.m. - MV Complaint - The department received a call from an emergency responder that there was a car parked on Depot Square that blocked a fire lane. After the officer came on duty and headed out he looked for the vehicle, but did not see any parking violations.

4:19 p.m. - Juvenile Problem - The department received a call from the Brown Public Library. The caller was concerned about the young juveniles that were in and out of the building apparently bullying or harassing each other. The noise and conversation was also disruptive to the other library guests. The officer responded to help quiet the library.

5:09 p.m. - Suspicious Person/ Circumstance - The department was advised of juveniles on the common that might be fighting. The officer was on patrol and responded to the area.

6:12 p.m. - Trespassing - Marlena M. Acevedo, age 25 of Northfield Vermont was issued a citation for unlawful trespass. Acevedo was issued a trespass notice back on May 7th, 2009 by Norwich University. Acevedo was located on Norwich property and was taken into custody for violating the trespass order. Acevedo is cited to appear in the Washington county District Court on 4-29-10 at 12:00 pm to answer the charge.

April 2

10:18 a.m. - Juvenile Problem - Northfield High School r ported a student who was absent, and the mother advised he was supposed to be in school. The officer initiated a missing person report. The juvenile was located later in the afternoon. The juvenile voluntarily accompanied the officer to meet with a screener from Washington County Mental Health. The juvenile's mother also accompanied him to the hospital, and took custody of him from that point.

6:59 p.m. - MV Complaint - Police responded to the Falls Trailer Park for a report of a motorcycle driving up and down the Falls Trailer Park road. The complainant advised that the bike is not registered and the male is not a wearing a helmet. Police responded but did not locate the individual on the bike.

9:51 p.m. - Alcohol Offense - A male, 20 year old resident of West Hill Road in Northfield Vermont was issued a Teen Alcohol Safety Paperwork and a littering ticket after he threw a bag of Doritios Chips out the window of the vehicle he was traveling in at the intersection of Wall and Water Streets. While speaking with the underage male, Police detected a moderate odor of intoxicants emitting from him and he had a BAC of .055% 22:00 hours.

10:52 p.m. - DUI - Gary A Goodell, age 42 of Barre Vermont was issued a citation to appear in the Washington County District Court on 4-22-10 to answer the charge of driving under the influence of alcohol. Goodell was stopped for speeding and crossing the center line. Goodell performed the standardized field sobriety exercises and did poorly. Goodell had an evidentiary test of .080% BAC at 23:38 hours using the Infrared Data Master.

April 3

3:36 a.m. - DUI - Joseph J. Stetch III, age 21 of Allentown PA was issued a citation to appear in the Washington County District Court on 4- 22-10 to answer the charge of Driving under the influence of alcohol. Northfield Police responded to Norwich University for a complaint that Stetch had almost run down a company of Norwich Recruits and was intoxicated. Stetch performed poorly on sobriety exercises and had a preliminary BAC of .100%.

8:02 a.m. - Litter/Pollution/Public Health - Police received a complaint of littering on Wall Street. Police were advised that several items had been discarded by unknown individuals. Police photographed the items, and they were removed by the property owner. Due to the close proximity to the Police Department, the security cameras will be reviewed in an effort to identify the offenders.

7:26 p.m. - Animal Problem - A concerned resident called about two dogs at a Cross Street residence. The officer responded to the address but no one was home. The officer could see food and water for the dogs. The officer left a card requesting the owner call back. Upon speaking with the owner she advised they were in the process of moving and in the meantime had been leaving the dogs at the garage, while still taking care of them.

9:33 p.m. - Animal Problem - Norwich University staff called to report a loose dog. The dog was picked up. No identifying tags were located on the dog. The dog was brought to the pound. The dog is an older golden retriever.

April 4

3:42 a.m. - Alcohol Offense - Police stopped a vehicle on North Main Street for its registration being under revocation. All the occupants had been consuming alcohol and one male was under the legal age of 21. The male had a BAC .117% at 03:46 hours. He was issued a Washington County teen alcohol safety sheet. The operator received a Vermont Civil Violation Complaint for no registration and his vehicle was impounded.

4:21 p.m. - DLS Phillip Amell age 30 of Northfield, VT was arrested for driving while suspended. Police stopped Amell on North Main street for failing to use his turn signal. Upon checking the status of Amell's license the officer was informed it was under criminal suspension. Amell was transported to the Northfield Police Station for processing and released with a citation to appear in court on 5-13-10.

5:02 p.m. - Suspicious Person/ Circumstance - A resident of Pleasant Street called to report a suspicious incident involving her son. Her son advised while riding his bike a vehicle pulled up and the male operator motioned him to come over. The juvenile wrote the license plate down and went home. The officer called the owner of the vehicle and spoke with his son who advised he had stopped at the crosswalk and was motioning for the juvenile to go ahead and cross the street.

April 5

5:42 p.m. - Family Fight/Domestic - Officers responded to a residence at the Northfield Falls Trailer Park for the report of a family fight. Upon arrival the officers spoke with the parties involved. The officers determined the argument was verbal in nature. One of the parties advised he would be leaving shortly and that would alleviate the situation.

April 6

12:59 a.m. - Noise Disturbance - Police responded to a residence on Washington Street for a loud noise complaint. Upon the officers arrival he could hear loud music coming from the residence. The officer made contact with a tenant of the residence and issued a Vermont Municipal Ordinance Ticket for the noise violation. The loud music was turned down by the tenant.
