Third Graders Delight At Reading

The Brown Public Library presented the “grand finale” to the 2009-2010 RIF (Reading Is Fundamental) program when author and performer Michael Caduto visited the Northfield Elementary School on April 16. Michael invited student participation as he told stories and performed songs accompanied by guitar and Native American drum. Coincidentally the third-graders had just used two books coauthored by Michael, Keepers of the Earth and Keepers of Animals, as they learned about Native Americans. In addition to books Michael has written over 100 magazine articles and many feature articles for newspapers. He’s the founder P.E.A.C.E. (Programs for Environmental Awareness and Cultural Exchange) and has received many awards for his books and his contributions to environmental education. The Reading Is Fundamental Program is designed to promote literacy by providing high quality books for elementary students. Part of the process is to allow students to select from a wide variety of titles including both fiction and non-fiction. This was the third time this year that students have been able to choose a RIF book they can take home and keep. The Brown Public Library has been raising funds and administering this program for over 30 years to benefit the children of Northfield. This year our funds were provided solely by the Sid and Cecilia Lance Foundation, whose ongoing generosity allows this program to continue.
