The Blue Devil’s were coming off a season opening win against Whitcomb and were looking forward to their home opener. That was the good news. The bad news was that Winooski and the weather spoiled the Blue Devil’s week.

On Tuesday the “Devils played their home opener against Winooski and fell to the Spartans by a 14-3 count.

On Saturday the game scheduled against Cannan had to be postponed because of weather conditions. The bottom line is that the end of the week the Blue Devil’s record stood at 1-1.

The Blue and White boys will have to wait to play again until they host Twinfield this Thursday at Hayden Field to work on getting back into the winning column. That game is slated for a 4:30 start.

Against Winooski, last Tuesday, things did not get off to an auspicious start for the Blue Devils. Winooski posted a five spot in the top of the fist and things went steadily downhill for the ‘Devils from there.

Williamstown starter Logan Clark didn’t help his own cause with a pair of walks and a wild pitch in the top of the first but a bloop Spartan single, a squeeze bunt and a two run double added three more gave the Spartans all they would need after just one half inning. It would have been at least 7-0 if not for Johnny Earls nice catch in centerfield to put an end to the Winooski threat and stop the bleeding at 5-0.

The Blue Devils got one back in the bottom of the first when Ray Burgos walked, promptly stole second and scored on a Logan Clark single to make it a 5-1 game. But that was all they would get in the opening inning. The Blue and White left the bases loaded and after one complete inning they trailed by four runs.

That would be as close as Williamstown would get. The teams traded runs in the fourth to make it a 6-2 Winooski lead and then the Spartans took charge of the scoring. Winooski tallied two runs in the fifth, four runs in the sixth and capped their scoring with a single run in the seventh. Williamstown only got one run back and that came in the sixth inning when Logan Clark scored on a passed ball but the scoreboard showed a final score of Winooski 14 Williamstown 3.

Blue Devil pitcher Logan Clark almost went the distance. He pitched 6 and 1/3 innings before he reached the 120 pitch count limit. He did howeve rpitch well according to his coach. “ Logan pitched great but the defense came out flat. We made more mental errors than physical errors,” said coach Jared Hart. “But that was something we talked about at practice on Wednesday,” the coach added.

Mitch St. Onge came on to get the final two outs in the top of the seventh and the Williamstown bats went quietly in the bottom of the seventh. When the Winooski Spartans boarded the bus back home they had a 14-3 win under their belt.

The Blue Devil Boy’s will host Twinfield This afternoon (Thursday) at 4:30 and will travel over the hill to Northfield for an 11 a.m. contest this Saturday.
