VSO To Feature Yo Yo Ma During New 2011 Season

The Northfield News

BURLINGTON –Jaime Laredo, music director of the Vermont Symphony Orchestra, has announced the VSO 2010-2011 Masterworks series schedule, including a closing concert featuring world-renown cellist Yo- Yo Ma on April 30, 2011.

Mr. Laredo and Yo-Yo Ma are still planning final repertoire details but the program will include the Saint-Saëns Cello Concerto No 1 and Tchaikovsky’s Variations on a Rococo Theme.

The event will undoubtedly be the biggest the VSO has ever produced at the Flynn Center.

In addition to the Yo-Yo Ma concert, the season presents two piano soloists: Alon Goldstein in October, performing Tchaikovsky’s first concerto, and in January, Peter Serkin protégé Anna Polonsky performing the Mozart concerto no. 27.

Mr. Laredo will conduct both piano concerts.

The October program includes Beethoven’s Leonore Overture and the January program features Beethoven’s Symphony No. 4.

In December, the VSO is teaming up with the Flynn Center to co-present a new work by Jennifer Higdon, “On a Wire,” a concerto written for orchestra and the sextet “eighth blackbird.”

The program, conducted by Anthony Princiotti, includes the Sibelius Symphony No. 2.

On March 5, one of Jaime Laredo’s protégés, Bella Hristova, will perform Dvorak’s Violin Concerto.

This concert will include Mendelssohn’s Symphony No 3, “Scotch,” with Laredo conducting.

The season will conclude with the special concert on April 30 featuring two of classical music’s all-time premier artists: acclaimed cellist Yo-Yo Ma and Vermont’s own Jaime Laredo conducting.

Masterworks series concerts are performed on Saturday evenings at the Flynn Center in Burlington beginning at 8:00 p.m. Performances are preceded at 7:00 p.m. by “Musically Speaking,” a free pre-concert discussion providing entertaining insight into the evening program.

Subscriptions for the five-concert Masterworks series at the Flynn Center range from $71 to $273, with a discounted $42 for students. For additional information or season tickets, please call the VSO office at 800-VSO- 9293, extension 10, or visit the VSO website at www.vso.org.
