Northfield Police Report

May 5

10:52 a.m. - Animal Problem - The department received a call regarding a dog. The caller stated that they thought the dog was mistreated and underfed. The officers responded to the North Main Street address and did not locate a dog.

2:37 p.m. - Citizen Assist - Police as well as Northfield Rescue responded to a reported car vs utility pole crash on S. Main Street. Upon arrival and further investigation it was determined that the vehicle had not crashed into the utility police but did run out of gas. Police were able to determine that the damage to the vehicle had occurred earlier that day in a different town. The operator was taken to CVH for a mental health evaluation.

4:03 p.m. - Citizen Assist - The department received a call from a tenant of a Central Street residence. The building is shared by multiple tenants and the walls are very thin. Both tenants have made complaints about the noise. The officers met with the caller to see if there was a resolution.

4:23 p.m. - Theft - Police responded to the campus of Norwich University to take a complaint from a student at Crawford Hall who had reported that his lap top computer had been stolen from his room sometime today and between the hours 11 a.m. and 4:23p.m. The case is under investigation.

May 6

10:18 a.m. - Non-sufficient Funds Check - Police took a complaint from a local business concerning the passing of a check that was returned from the bank marked insufficient funds. The case is under investigation.

1:05 p.m. - Theft - A student at Norwich University reported finding one of his stolen text books at the University Book Store for sale as a used book. At the end of the semester the book store will purchase books back from students and resale them at a reduced cost. In this matter, the student had not reported the theft of the book until he found it in the book store. The case is under investigation.

8:01 p.m. - Theft - Police received a complaint of a stolen lawn mower. The complainant advised that her sister in law stole the machine from her residence and that it belonged to her father. The complainant advised that her father was going to contact the Vermont State Police Bethel Barracks and report it stolen. No further action at this time.

May 7

7:24 a.m. - Suspicious Person/ Circumstance - Police were advised of a suspicious female who appeared at a residents home and advised she was lost and looking for directions. A few minutes later the same female was seen by the complainant acting suspicious outside a vacant home. The female when approached advised that her tire was flat. The complainant advised that none of the tires were flat on the vehicle. The complainant got a plate number and called police.

8:16 a.m. - Theft of Automobile - Police were advised of a stolen vehicle that had been taken from a local business over the night time hours. The vehicle stolen was reported this morning being seen in the Northfield Falls/Berlin area being operated by a female and had stopped at one point going to a residence and asking for direction. The same vehicle and female were also observed wandering around private property in the Berlin area as well.

4:39 p.m. - Agency Assistance - Police and Fire responded to a reported dumptser fire on VT RT 12 in the South Main section of town. There was no explanation to what caused the fire, but it was quickly put out by the fire department. Property damage if any was contained to the dumpster which is located away from the building.

11:03 p.m. - Suspicious Person/ Circumstance - Police responded to Central Street for a report of people yelling in the area. When Police arrived, they did not observe anyone in the area but did locate a loud party a little ways down the street. Police spoke with the tenants and advised them if I came back that they would be receiving $300.00 noise complaint tickets. The tenants immediately broke up the party. No further action taken.

11:35 p.m. - DLS - Police stopped a vehicle on North Main Street for speeding. Dispatch advised that the female operator was under suspension for a prior alcohol violation and for an unpaid fine. The operator was issued two Vermont Civil Violation Complaints for speed and for operating after suspension. The operators vehicle was towed by Baroffios Garage.

May 8

12:29 a.m. - Alcohol Offense - Police responded to Norwich University to Crawford Hall for a complaint of intoxicated females. When Police arrived with Northfield Ambulance, they found that both females were under the age of twenty one. One female had a BAC of .170 and the other had a BAC of .191. Both individuals received Washington County Teen Alcohol Safety Paperwork.

12:47 a.m. - Suspicious Person/ Circumstance - Police responded to the area of Pleasant Street and Wall Street for a citizen dispute. The complainant advised that a very intoxicated male and female were arguing in front of his residence and that they threw beer cans onto his property. Police responded but did not locate either party.

3:11 a.m. - Alcohol Offense - Police stopped a vehicle for illumination required. At the time of the stop, Police detected an odor of intoxicants emitting from the operator. At 03:10 hours the operator had a BAC of . 038%. The operator received two Vermont civil Violation complaints for having a BAC above .020% while driving and for illumination required. The operator and a passenger received Teen Alcohol Safety Paperwork.

4:31 a.m. - Agency Assistance - Police responded to I-89 South, Mile Marker 38 to assist Vermont State Police with a possible intoxicated operator reported by North Main Service. The operator was screened and was found not to be under the influence. No further action taken.

7:58 a.m. - Accident PD - Police received a report of a motor vehicle crash on Chandler Road. Police were advised that a vehicle had overturned, but that there were no injuries. Upon arrival, Police determined that the operator of the vehicle had not paid attention to the safe operation of his vehicle, and it left the travel portion of the roadway. A crash report was completed for the operator and the vehicle was towed.

8:27 a.m. - Unlawful Mischief - Police received a report of a vandalism on Hallstrom Road. Police were told that a mailbox had been vandalized sometime overnight. No other mailboxes in the area were reported to be vandalized, nor were any others located by Police. The Northfield Police Department are currently looking for anyone with information in reference to this incident to contact them at 802- 485-9181.

May 9

1:13 a.m. - Family Fight/Domestic - Police responded to Western Ave for a report of a family fight. When Police arrived, they found that a 13 year old boy was refusing to listen to his mother. The boy was told to obey his mother and was told to go to bed. No further action taken.

1:50 a.m. - DUI - Michael C. Canas, age 40 of Northfield was arrested for Driving under the influence of alcohol. Canas was stopped for having defective equipment and while speaking with him, police detected a strong odor of intoxicants emitting from him. Canas did not perform the standardized field sobriety exercises satisfactorily. Canas had a preliminary BAC of .119 per cent at 02:11 and a evidentiary test of .128 percent at 02:59 hours.

7:10 a.m. - Phone Problem /Harassment - Police received a report of a phone problem from the Northfield Falls Mobile Home Park. Police are currently investigating the incident in the event charges are filed.

9:24 a.m. - Lost Property - Police received a report of lost property from a VT RT 12A resident. Police were advised that while out, the complainant had lost her operator's license. Police took the report in the event the operator's license is located.

9:58 a.m. - MV Complaint - Police received a report of motor vehicle complaint on Lovers Lane. Police were advised of a tailgating incident, in which the complainant gathered the license plate of the tailgating vehicle and forwarded it to the Police. The complainant also knew the identity of the operator. Police will attempt to locate the operator of the vehicle, and will issue the appropriate violation for the offense.

10:07 a.m. - Family Fight/Domestic - Police responded to VT RT 12A for report of a domestic disturbance. Upon arrival, Police found that a verbal argument had occurred, and that no physical acts of violence had taken place. Police helped to mediate and mitigate the situation before departing the scene.

May 10

10:22 a.m. - Suspicious Person/ Circumstance - The department was contacted for a victim of a reported sexual assault. The officer met with the victim. After contacting Department of Children and Families, interviews with suspects and witnesses were conducted with representatives from both agencies.

10:51 a.m. - Theft - an employee of a business on Vermont Route 12A called to advise the business had been burglarized sometime over the weekend. The employee advised there had been multiple incidents recently of property missing from the business. The employee advised what was missing, and who had access to the building. Follow up interviews will be conducted with the other parties.

11:08 a.m. - Suspicious Person/ Circumstance - A North Main Street business contacted the police department to report an attempted break in. The business owner observed damage to a door frame consistent with someone trying to gain forced entry. It did not appear entry was made. The owner could not identify anything missing.

8:19 p.m. - Suspicious Person/ Circumstance - Police responded to a residence on S. Main Street for a report of a vandalism. Upon the officers arrival the complainant advised someone had thrown a water balloon thru the window of the residence. A report was taken.

10:20 p.m. - Noise Disturbance - Police responded to a residence on Washington Street for a report of loud music. Upon the officers arrival no loud music was observed. The officer made contact with the resident and advised him of the complaint made. He was advised of the fine that would be imposed should the officer have to return and observe a noise violation.

May 11

8:56 a.m. - Animal Problem - A caller advised that he had a black lab visiting him on South Main street. The canine was friendly and was in his side yard area. The caller had a phone number from the dog tag. A message was left on the machine that the dog was visiting and to call in order to reunite the dog with its owner. No contact was made by the afternoon, so the dog was lodged at Baroffio's Kennel until it could be picked up by its owner.

9:52 a.m. - Suspicious Person/ Circumstance - Police received a report of a suspicious circumstance from Fourth Street. Police were advised that when the complainant woke up in the morning, her medications were missing. Police spoke with the complainant and gathered details surrounding the incident so it could be looked into further.

1:50 p.m. - Sex Offense - Police received a report of a possible sex offense that occurred on VT RT 12A. Police, in conjunction with the Department of Children and Families conducted interviews in reference to the allegations. After several interviews, Police were not able to substantiate the claims.

2:49 p.m. - Suspicious Person/ Circumstance - A student of Norwich came to the police department to report that he had just noticed damage to his vehicle. Sometime since the night before the driver side mirror had been removed from his vehicle. Unknown for sure where or how. There was no broken mirror on the ground when he went to his vehicle today, but it had been parked during the prior evening in a different place and he did not notice it missing at that time. Report taken.

7:49 p.m. - Phone Problem /Harassment - Police received a report of a phone problem from a complainant who wished to speak with an officer. The complainant received a derogatory voice message from one of her relatives. The officer spoke with the complainant in an effort to help her resolve the situation.
