Village Meeting Coming On Tuesday, June 1, Those There Will Decide Who Will Be Running Things Next Year
It’s that time of year and hopes are high that there will be a good turn out for the Northfield Village Meeting set for June 1 at 7:30 p.m. in the Mary Granai Corrigan Auditorium at the high school.
The only real excitement in the Village Report was the photograph on the cover showing the construction flagger on East Street directing traffic around last year’s water main revitalization project. The flagger shown was the same one who was allegedly hit by Larry Drown some time after the photo was taken. His trial for that altercation is scheduled to start in October of this year.
All of the voting this year will be at the meeting and no longer is there any Australian ballot voting in village elections following the vote last year to do away with that process.
However, the decision to do away with secret balloting was decided last year by a very small portion of the village voters, only 16 people showed up at the actual meeting in the evening. Thus, by a voice vote last year, Australian balloting was shelved.
Hopefully, this year the turnout will be better.
Voters will decide on who will be our trustees for the next few years. There are two trustee positions up for a three year seat and one trustee for one year, that being the remainder of a three year position.
Tom McCarney is not running again. However, because there is no reqiurement that candidates register prior to voting, who may replace him depends on who shows up and which way they vote at village meeting.
Two other positions are open, Colin Bright and Samantha Baraw. Both may seek reelection.
In other matters, the voters will be asked to allow a delinquency fee of 1 percent per month on water and sewer bills that remain unpaid, to authorize $103,410 for village general fund expenditures and $586,250 in street and highway expenditures, of which $432,390 will be raised from taxes and the balance coming from last year’s surplus.
