Northfield Police Report
May 12
8 a.m. - Theft - Police took a complaint and is investigating the theft of a pocketbook along with its contents from an unsecured motor vehicle sometime over the night time hours. A small amount of cash was in the pocketbook along with personal ID and credit cards. Residents are reminded that locking your car doors is highly recommended, even in your door yard.
8:30 a.m. - Unlawful Mischief - Police were advised of damage done to the high school baseball teams batting cage as well as the orange plastic fencing was pulled down around the field located at Memorial Park. The case is under investigation.
10:40 a.m. - Theft - Police spoke with a resident who was reporting that her prescription medication and some money was stolen from her pocketbook from inside her home. The complainant advised that she had been gone from her unlocked house for a short period of time and upon returning noticed the theft. Residents are reminded that locking your house when you will be away is one of the best ways to prevent becoming a victim to crime.
11:44 a.m. - Noise Disturbance - Police responded to a residence on Jarvis Lane
for a report of loud noise. The officer did not hear any noise violation upon his arrival. The officer did make contact with the tenant and advise them of the complaint made.
8:26 p.m. - Agency Assistance - Police were requested by UVM Police to serve a notice against trespass on a Norwich student stemming from an incident at UVM. The notice was served without incident. The notice of trespass was faxed back to the UVM Police Services.
8:56 p.m. - Family Fight/Domestic - Police responded to 282 Vine Street for a report of a family disturbance. The female complainant advised that she and her boy friend were having an argument and that she was feeling threatened by him. Police responded and spoke with both parties and it was agreed that they would stay separated for the rest of the night. No further action taken.
11:02 p.m. - Suspicious Person/ Circumstance - Police responded to Water Street for a report of two Norwich Students chasing each other up and down the road shooting roman candles at each other. The complainant advised that they ran next door to a building that was being rented by Norwich Students. Police spoke with the tenants and they stated that the people with the roman candles ran past the residence, got into a car, and headed out towards the rugby field.
11:39 p.m. - Controlled Substance Problem - Police responded to Cumberland Farms for a report of found drugs. The cashiers located the drugs in the store so if you lost them, please contact the Northfield Police Department. You will have to identify the drugs and what they were in to be able to claim them. May 13
3:30 p.m. - Lost Property - The Chief of Norwich Security called for a student of the university. When going to his vehicle which had been parked on campus for a period of time, he noticed the front New Hampshire registration plate missing. Unk when or how long it has been gone.
3:32 p.m. - MV Complaint - A citizen who had been riding a bicycle with her family on 12 north reported to police that she and her infant son were almost hit by a south bound vehicle that had crossed the white fog line. The citizen provided a plate number of the vehicle and completed a sworn written statement concerning the matter. Police plan on taking enforcement action with the operator of the vehicle.
6:19 p.m. - Alcohol Offense - Richard Thomas D. Savino, age 22 of West Burke Vermont was issued a citation to appear in the Washington County District Court on 6-10-10 at 12:00 pm to answer the charge of furnishing alcohol. On 5-1-10, Savino allegedly purchased alcohol for an under age Norwich Student who was later caught with he alcohol by Norwich Officials.
May 14
12:35 a.m. - Noise Disturbance - Police responded to Slate Ave in Northfield Vermont for a noise complaint. The complainant advised that a large party was going on across the street and when he asked the individuals attending the party to keep it down they told him to pound sand. Police responded and broke up the party and ticketed the tenant with a noise ordinance violation complaint.
9:21 a.m. - Citizen Assist - Police took a request from a local employer who was requesting an Notice Against Trespass order be served upon a former employee who was bothering a current employee.
10:45 a.m. - Theft - A student of Norwich University contacted the police regarding a missing wallet from his room in Crawford Hall. Unfortunately, the student did not know who had been in his room recently, and he was getting ready to leave by plane for home. The officer suggested ideas for him to provided his identity as all of his personal ID's were in the wallet.
12:08 p.m. - Agency Assistance - Police served a Temporary Order For Relief From Abuse issued by Washington County Family Court. The Order was served and explained to the subject involved.
3:56 p.m. - Suspicious Person/ Circumstance - Police and Fire responded to a dumpster fire in the South Village area of town. This is the second fire in the same dumpster in a little over a week. The dumpster is located at a rental housing apartment building.
7:38 p.m. - Suspicious Person/ Circumstance - Police received a complaint about damage to a motor vehicle that occurred in another town. The complainant wanted it documented that the car was damaged so that she could go back to the garage in an attempt to get them to pay for the damages. Police photographed the damage and advised her that she needed to report this in the town that it occurred in. No further action taken.
May 15
2:55 a.m. - Alcohol Offense - Police stopped a motor vehicle on VT RT 12S for a speeding violation. While speaking with the operator, Police detected an odor of intoxicants emitting from the vehicle. Police determined that a 20 year old occupant of the vehicle was intoxicated. After consenting to a PBT, he was found to have a BAC of 0.114% and was issued paperwork for the TASP program. A warning was issued for the speed violation.
10:36 a.m. - Accident PD - Police responded to the South Main Street - Depot Square intersection for a motor vehicle collision. It was determined that one vehicle had rear-ended another, causing minor damages to both vehicles involved. No injuries were reported by the operators. Police completed a crash report for the operator's involved in the collision.
11:03 a.m. - MV Complaint - Police received a report of a motor vehicle complaint on Garvey Hill Road. The complainant advised the Police that several juveniles were witnessed riding their bicycles down the road at high rates of speed and without helmets. The complainant was concerned that once they reached the Cemetary Street intersection, that a car crash could occur if they were not careful. Police will speak with the youths.
6:22 p.m. - Agency Assistance - Police responded to a residence in Northfield Falls to assist the Vermont State Field Supervision Unit (FSU) with a consent search of a residence. A search of the residence found approximately 30 grams of marijuana, 4 small marijuana plants, as well as drug paraphernalia. Two residents of Northfield Falls were charged with Possession of Marijuana, and cited to appear on 6/24/10 in Washington County District Court.
7:10 p.m. - Phone Problem /Harassment - Police responded to Dogwood Glen for a report of harassment by electronic device. The complainant advised that she was getting unwanted phone calls from some of her relatives and that she wanted them to cease. Police will contact the other party to find out what is the problem and to advise them to stop or else charges will be filed.
7:21 p.m. - Citizen Dispute - Police responded to the Northfield Falls Trailer Park for a reported citizens dispute. Police spoke with the complainant and she advised that a neighbor started yelling at her and threatening her without provocation. The other persons involved stated that the complainant was being verbally abusive to her. Police advised both parties not to talk to or exchange words with each other.
11:50 p.m. -Suspicious Person/ Circumstance - Police responded to a residence at a local apartment complex after a citizen reported hearing someone in the apartment next door. The tenants were away and no one was supposed to be in that apartment. Police checked the residence and found it secure. There were no signs that anyone had been in the residence.
May 16
10:10 a.m. - Unlawful Mischief - Police received a report of a suspicious circumstance on VT RT 64. Police were advised that an unknown individual uprooted their mailbox, likely sometime overnight.
5:53 p.m. - Unlawful Mischief - Police responded to the Falls Mobile Home park for a report of a vandalism. Police were told that juveniles were disturbing several pieces of property on the complainants front lawn. Upon arrival, Police found that the juveniles had since fled the scene. No damages were reported by the complainant.
May 17
8:16 a.m. - Accident PD - Police responded to VT RT 64 for a report of a moose vs. car collision. Upon arrival, Police found that the vehicle involved sustained heavy damage, and that the operator was uninjured. The moose expired shortly after police arrival. The eastbound travel lane of VT RT 64 was reduced to one lane travel during the crash. A Vermont Fish and Wildlife Warden also responded and removed the deceased moose.
12:29 p.m. - Citizen Assist - A concerned mother came to the police department to seek advise. Her children had been playing at a residence on Union Street during the weekend. A resident of Union Street had said inappropriate words to a young male. The officer will be contacting the reported offender and follow up with the complainant.
2:29 p.m. - Animal Problem - Police responded to VT RT 12N for a report of an animal problem. The complainant reported that she had taken custody of a stray black lab. Police responded with the animal control officer and took custody of the dog. No identifying tags were affixed to the dogs collar, so it was housed at the kennel until its owner could be identified.
2:43 p.m. - Phone Problem /Harassment – An officer was requested to meet with a resident at Dogwood Glen. The caller reported receiving harassing and threatening phone messages from an unknown number. Police are already investigating these same claims by the complainant, and this information will be coordinated with the ongoing investigation.
4 p.m. - MV Complaint - Police received a report of a motor vehicle complaint in the Falls Mobile Home park. Police were told that a juvenile was riding a motorized scooter in the roadway and was a hazard. Police contacted the mother of the juvenile and addressed the issue with her.
5:21 p.m. - Unlawful Mischief - Police responded to North Main Street for a report of a vandalism. Upon arrival, Police learned that several Dogwood Glen youths were digging rocks out of a rock face on the property. It was apparent that the rock face was beginning to deteriorate and concerns were expressed over the safety of the youths. Police contacted the VT State Housing Authority in an attempt to alleviate the issue.
8:12 p.m. - Accident PD - A citizen of Bailey Road called to report a vehicle had struck her vehicle while in the parking lot of a local restaurant. The officer made contact with both parties and exchanged information. Only minor damage was observed on the complainants vehicle.
May 18
3:15 p.m. - Sex Offense - While investigating a reported sex offense from Department of Children and Families, another violation of the victim by a known offender was discovered. The officer will be investigating this offense with DCF.
3:33 p.m. - Theft - The department was notified of a firearm that was missing. A student had his personal property stored off campus. When he left Northfield for the summer break he went to the off campus site to pick up his property and went home. During the unpacking of his items he discovered that his firearm was not in its storage container. Unknown when it was taken.
8:03 p.m. - Citizen Assist - A Northfield citizen requested to speak with the police in reference to an issue she was having with her neighbors. The officer spoke with the complainant and offered some suggestions to resolve the dispute.
