Northfield Police Report
May 19
2:23 p.m. - Traffic Hazard - Police responded to a situation on the Union Brook Road in which a loaded cement mixer making a delivery had become stuck after the right rear tires of the mixer lost stability while going over a culvert up to the job site. The Mixer would have completely landed on its side but a tree prevented it from happening. A heavy duty wrecker and a front end loader excavator were use to upright the mixer which was undamaged.
4:50 p.m. - Assault - Police responded to a mutual affray in which several people were physically fighting with each other. One group who had been fighting are claiming self defense while the lone individual is claiming that she was ganged up on and is the true victim. Both parties involved had minor injuries. The matter will be sent to the County Prosecutor for review and charging.
7:09 p.m. - Citizen Dispute - Police responded to the Northfield Falls Trailer Park for a report of a citizen dispute. Police were informed that large groups of people were having verbal confrontations and that it may turn into a brawl. This situation was a carry over from an incident earlier in the afternoon. Police made sure all parties were separated and that all unnecessary people left the park. Police made several patrols through the park that night.
10:10 p.m. - 911 Hangup Call - Police responded to a large fight on Vine Street. Jimmy Guara age 35 of Northfield and Sarah Knowles, age 25 of Northfield were arrested for disorderly conduct and unlawful mischief. Knowles had been in a confrontation earlier in the evening and they had gone looking for the other parties involved. They went to a residence on Vine street and attempted to force there way into the residence to continue the fight.
May 20
9:31 a.m. - Theft - Police took a complaint of theft of sheet metal being taken from an abandoned building with out permission. The individuals were identified by, the complainant and were asked to return the property which they did. This matter is pending further investigation.
9:39 a.m. - Suspicious Person/ Circumstance - Police spoke with an education professional who was reporting a matter concerning the welfare of a child. The information was called in to the DCF hotline.
10:51 a.m. - Unlawful Mischief - Police were advised of a mailbox that had been struck with an object and dented sometime over the night time hours. In addition to the damage a orange traffic cone was found at the scene. Police are investigating and request citizens to report immediately any suspicious activity when it is happening to police.
May 21
8:41 a.m. - Parking Problem - Police responded to Central Street for a report of a vehicle blocking a driveway. Police responded and a parking ticket was issued. Police did notice that the parking violation probably was not deliberate as no curb cut exists for the driveway and anyone not paying attention could miss the fact that a driveway is present. A request to paint this section of curb will be requested.
1:33 p.m. - Citizen Assist - Police were contacted and requested to serve a Trespass Notice on a subject living in town.
3:08 p.m. - Citizen Dispute - Police responded to a residence in which the resident was arguing with another subject over property belonging to another subject. The property involved were items that had been left in the residence. The resident of the apartment and the person retrieving the property got into a verbal argument, but did separate prior to the arrival of police. The property
in dispute was turned over to the owner.
9:52 p.m. - Suspicious Person/ Circumstance - Police received a tip from an off duty Berlin Officer that he observed a person violating his conditions of release. Police located the individual and asked him to drive to the Northfield Police Department to confirm the allegations. All the conditions of release had been lifted that very same day by the courts. No violation occurred.
May 22
3:23 a.m. - Alarm - Police responded to the Northfield Pharmacy for a report of a burglary alarm with broken glass. When Police arrived, they found that someone had thrown a large piece of asphalt through the front door window. Police will be reviewing area surveillance cameras to see if the perpetrator is on film. The estimated damages to the door are $600.00.
8:56 a.m. - Citizen Assist - Police assisted with a child
safety seat clinic that was being sponsored by Cody Chevrolet. Multiple people took advantage of this clinic and it is a free service to all that stop by. There was 13 car seat technicians on had to assist all that came to the clinic.
11:33 a.m. - Suspicious Person/ Circumstance – Police received a report of suspicious gun shots coming from the area of Smith Hill Road. Police responded and heard several shots, and it sounded as though someone was target practicing. Police canvassed the area of Stony Brook Road, Smith Hill Road and Adam Hill Road, but did not hear the shots again. It was not able to be determined where the shots came from.
1:22 p.m. - Trespassing - Police received a report of a possible trespassing complaint on Pearl Street. A landlord called to advise that there was a possible 'squatter' in one of his apartments. Police contacted the tenant, who was not at the residence, and found that the individual was allowed to be there. Police advised the complainant of the same.
2:22 p.m. - Suspicious Person/ Circumstance - Police responded to Dogwood Glen for report of a suspicious E911 call. Police responded and verified that there was no need for Police assistance, and that the call was for the Ambulance Service, who was already on scene.
9:25 p.m. - Suspicious Person/ Circumstance - An officer responded to a residence at Dog Wood Glen for the report of some suspicious activity. The complainant advised some kids had thrown something at her window. A check of the surrounding area turned up nothing of note.
May 23
5:37 a.m. - Family Fight/Domestic - Derek Metivier, DOB 2-27-84 was issued a citation for unlawful mischief, possession of marijuana and possession of regulated drug. On 5-23-10 at approximately 05:37 hours, Northfield Police responded to the Falls Trailer Park for a report of a fight. The complainant advised that she caught Metivier using drugs and that is what the fight was about. The complainant turned over Metivier's drugs and paraphernalia to police.
11:20 a.m. - Custodial Interference - Police met with a resident at the Police Department on Wall Street in reference to a custodial dispute. Police met with the complainant and after reviewing a court ordered divorce decree, ultimately referred the complaint to the court for further action. No criminal acts had taken place, so no Police action was necessary.
10:12 p.m. - Suspicious Person/ Circumstance - A resident of Northfield Falls came to the police department to report having received some suspicious/harassing calls. The complainant was unable to provide a phone number or address of the caller, but provided his name. Attempts to contact the caller will be made.
May 24
9:09 a.m. - Impounded Vehicle - Police had a vehicle towed on Rte. 14 in Williamstown after police stopped it and found it to be unregistered. Northfield Police was working with the Click it or Ticket Task Force at the time of the stop.
9:19 a.m. - Citizen Assist - Police responded to VT RT 12S for a vandalism. Upon arrival, Police met with the complainant who showed several small sections of her residence that her room-mate damaged. The roommate admitted to the damages, but said that they were unintentional. Arrangements were made to have the damages repaired, so no further Police action was necessary.
10:11 a.m. - Phone Problem /Harassment – Police were advised of a phone problem from a Dogwood Glen resident. Police spoke with the complainant and learned that she had received several text messages. It was determined that the content of the text messages did not fit the criteria for a criminal charge of disturbance of the peace via electronic communication. Police suggested that she block the incoming number via her cell phone carrier.
11:03 a.m. - Citizen Assist - Police assisted a Winch Hill Road resident at the Police Department in reference to a late reported motor vehicle collision. Police took the report of the collision and generated a report for insurance purposes.
2:36 p.m. - Agency Assistance - Police responded to Harmon Drive to assist the Northfield Ambulance Service with a call. Upon arrival, Police assisted the Ambulance crew with the patient.
2:48 p.m. - Theft - A resident of Winch Hill Road came to the police station to report of a theft of property from his residence. The complainant completed a written statement regarding this incident. The complainant had been away for an extended amount of time, so the time frame for this incident is expansive. No force was used to gain entry to the garage.
5:29 p.m. - Parking Problem - A resident of Northfield came to the police station to report a parking problem on Cemetery Street at the Cemetery. The complainant advised a trailer was blocking the entrance to the Cemetery. Upon checking the area the trailer was located. The trailer was removed shortly thereafter.
10:39 p.m. - Suspicious Person/ Circumstance - A resident of Pearl Street called to report a suspicious/unusual person in the parking lot of St. John's church. The complainant advised the female was yelling loudly and using expletives. Upon arrival the officer learned the female was arguing with her ex-boyfriend over the phone. She was provided a ride to a relatives for the night.
May 25
10:33 a.m. - Citizen Assist - Police responded to the resident of a Northfield resident who had locked themselves out of their home. Police responded to the residence and was able to unlock the door for the resident. Police provided several suggestions to the resident for future reference should the matter happen again.
