Photo by Bill Croney, The Northfield News The Lady Blue Devils softball team dropped three games last week. Last Thursday they fell at Concord 10-5, then on Friday they were shutout 11-0, at home, by Richford and Saturday they came out on the short end of an 8-3 score at Twinfield.

These three games brought the Lady Devil’s record to 4-12 for the season and the #13 spot in the VPA rankings. (The Girls played at #2 South Royalton after this issue of the Northfield News went to press. We will have a game story next week,)

Things started out brightly at Concord. The Lady Devils posted a three spot in the top of the first. Once again big innings by their opponents did the Lady Devils in. Concord plated five runs n the fourth to take a

5-4 lead and the Wildcats were never headed. Kristin Brown and Lourdes (Lulu) Perry each had a pair of singles to pace the Williamstown hitters and Kristin turned in a real “Web-Gem” defensively. In the fourth inning The Williamstown shortstop went way up in the air to snag a screaming line drive and seeing a Concord runner off second base, Kristin dove at the runner and tagged her out before she could get back to the base. But the bottom line was a 10-5 concord victory.

Back at home on Friday, the Lady Devils bats had a tough time catching up with some top flight Richford pitching. Williamstown could only manage singles by Kristin Brown and Lulu Perry while Richford batters sprayed the ball all over the field in the 11-0 Rocket win.. There were some bright spots on the Williamstown side of the ledger, though. The Lady Devil’s cut down two Rocket runners at the plate with nice defensive work at both ends of the play on both occasions. In the third inning the ‘Devils centerfielder, Erika Gauthier, fired a strike straight through from centerfield to catcher Renee Guy to cut down a would be Rocket run and in the fourth it was Erica Gauthier again, But this time she had help from the cut-off man, Caitlin Orton. Caitlin’s relay throw was right on the mark and once again Renee Guy blocked the plate nicely and made the play. But once again the Williamstown Girls came out on the short end of the scoreboard, falling 11-0 to Richford.

On the road at Twinfield on Saturday the Williamstown Girls closed out the regular season with an 8-3 loss to the Lady Trojans. Twinfield took a 3-0 lead in the bottom of the second inning but the Lady Devil’s closed to 3- 2 in their next at bat. That was as close as the Girls of the Blue and White would get. Twinfield Padded their lead with two runs in the home third and then added three insurance runs in the home sixth to cruise to an 8-3 win over the lady Devils. Williamstown got plenty of hitting Erica Guuthier rapped out three singles while Kristin Brown and Cassandra Bernier each added two singles of their own, Erica Gauthier didn’t just have a good day at the plate. She sparkled in the field as well. “ Erika had an awesome game in the field,” said Williamstown coach Hanna Bonneau. “There were four really tough catches she was able to make in centerfield.” One catch in particular stands out for coach Bonneau. “ In the bottom of the first Erika had to race into left-center and make a cross-body ‘Sno-Cone’ kind of catch. It was awesome,” the coach said.

The Blue Devil Girls wound up their season with a 4-12 record and a #13 seed as they head into the playoffs. The Northfield News will have Lady Devils playoff coverage in the next issue.
